Outside the frame
Behind my product photography is an incredibly simple set up most people never get to see. But as someone that spends a great deal of time styling, photographing and digitally editing product images, I find it interesting and valuable to see outside the frame of other peoples photos. Hence why I am sharing.
I am no expert and do not own fancy equipment. It is amazing what can be done with good natural light, a simple neutral background, a touch of digital editing and persistence.
My technique and style is constantly evolving. I have been tinkering with photography for the past five years, since I started my own design label. I am teaching myself as I go. In the handmade design industry, beautiful imagery is so important and I want to create all the images I use.
I love simplicity, an element of earthy rawness, natural light and pops of colour.

I do all of my own photography for my website and instagram account and a good portion comes from this simple set up out on the back steps of my shop. It is a well used space.
What time of day?
The best time to use this space is between 11am and 1pm while still in shade but the full sun only a few metres behind me. My indoor window shelf space works best between 2.30 - 4pm when the sunshine pours in, diffused by the frosted glass. For consistent imagery, I find it best to photograph products at around the same time each day or the light will be different.
My core props are:-
- Square wood top table painted in distressed white
- A sheet of weathered slightly grey ply
- The well seasoned hardwood steps out the back
- The cement slab
- A basket of staple props that includes seeds pods, twisted wisteria vines, blocks of wood, leaves, painted twigs, a wood cut out map of Queensland and small pottery vessels.
- A small wood board covered in aluminium foil
So there you go. A little glimpse behind the scenes. Rustic and simple.
Until next time,
xx Isabella

I love your pics, Isabella! They are clear and "cozy"! I can understand the set up behind your pics, my set up is similar ^_^
Thank you @silviabeneforti, it is a pretty simple set up but works well for now.
as always, you are extraordinarily resourceful :-), keep up the great work!
Thank you @natureofbeing. I think the resourcefulness is courtesy of my Mother and Oma and I have just adapted it in a creative business way.
