Very nice shots! Maybe the ones with the open back are from the 40's? I am just guessing. Metal was probably going to the war effort so they had to make cuts where they could. It's probably a long shot, but it could be an explanation. :)
Thanks and that does make sense to me, I cannot think or any other reason for it, so lets stick with that :)
