This is a Black Woodpecker, who visits us every now and then.
It's the largest of Europe's woodpeckers with a length of 40 - 57 cm and a wing span of 67–73 cm.
The food mostly consists of ants, especially carpenter ants that it hacks out of trees, stumps or trunks. It also eats beetles, cherries and blueberries.

There is also a lot of folklore associated with this bird.
If a Black Woodpecker settles in your yard, it is said that death will visit your house.
Even their bird vocalization is a bit scary and haunting!

As I write this, I can hear it scream outside my window... 👀

Beautiful photos! And interesting information about the bird, especially the folklore! We have similar folk for the bird here, too, "If the bird (its name is "Nok Saek") settles in your yard, it is said that death will visit your house".
