PORTRAITS OF ISTRA - Episode 8 - PULA : IN THE OLD TOWN, part 2

in #photographylast year (edited)

I'm on the top of the hill in the middle of the old town ...
IMG_5315 malo.jpg
... watching the city of Pula, the largest or more precisely, the only, real city on the Istra peninsula, spreading on the morning sun, below and around me ...
IMG_5316 malo.jpg
... this is the place where the traces of the first human settlements in the city area were found ...
IMG_5284 malo.jpg
... the ancient fort of the people called Histri, that settled on this Istra peninsula that is still named after them, about the year 1200 B.C, was once here to overlook the surroundings ...
IMG_5325 malo.jpg
... after the war from 221 to 177 year B.C when the Romans definitely defeated the Histri, this became Roman castrum, another fort basicaly :D ...
IMG_5332 malo.jpg
... and what we see here, on the last three photographs, is the well-preserved Venetian fort, built in between 1631 and 1633 ... interesting little fact, those were the years of bubonic plague in the area, and all the hardships and dying that this disease brought ...
IMG_5295 malo.jpg
... from some angles, the massive walls of the fortress, look like a big ship made of stone ...
IMG_5313 malo.jpg
... with a bit of zooming capability at hand, this is a great place to observe and photograph the old Pula ...
IMG_5307 malo.jpg
... and enjoy the urban vistas from the seagull prospective ...
IMG_5351 malo.jpg
... everywhere you look ...
IMG_5318 malo.jpg
... you can see a cool mix ...
IMG_5352 malo.jpg
... of architectural styles ... varied textures ...
IMG_5306 malo.jpg
... and different layers of history ...
IMG_5321 malo.jpg
... in every direction ...
IMG_5322 malo.jpg
... there is some interesting motif ...
IMG_5345 malo.jpg
... ready to be discovered ...
IMG_5282 malo.jpg
... on the following two photographs ...
IMG_5347 malo.jpg
... the fishing boat is passing slowly across the bay, returning from the night hunt in search of sardines ... and with a bit more zooming ...
IMG_5350 malo.jpg
... looks like a flying ship above the sea of rooftops ...
IMG_5339 malo.jpg
... this iconic old chimney was built soon after the World War one, for the tobacco factory that is no more there ...
IMG_4706 malo.jpg
... here is the same chimney from another prospective ... while walking on a cloudy autumn day ...
IMG_5297 malo.jpg
... and here is the last look at some shipyard constructions ...
IMG_5266 malo.jpg
... before starting to descend this fortified hill in the heart of the city ...
IMG_5260 malo.jpg
... and along the way ... is time to discover ...
IMG_5362 malo.jpg
... that all the hill ... from top to bottom ...
IMG_5364 malo.jpg
... is an amazing archeological site ...
IMG_5359 malo.jpg
... echoing the times of the Roman Empire ...
IMG_5357 malo.jpg
... when Pula, laying on its seven hills, with the large amphitheater and elegant triumphal arches and temples, was a nice smaller version of the capital city ...
IMG_5361 malo.jpg
... I can never get bored with this hill ...
IMG_5365 malo.jpg
... like in all such places with rich history still visible, sprouting from the contemporary asphalt and generic urban vegetation ...
IMG_5366 malo.jpg
... the immersion comes natural ...
IMG_5360 malo.jpg
... and one can easily get lost in daydreams and imagination ...
IMG_5263 malo.jpg
... on the following few photographs ...
IMG_5381 malo.jpg
... you can see ...
IMG_5379 malo.jpg
... the small Roman theater ...
IMG_5374 malo.jpg
... is still used for the concerts in summer ...
IMG_5261 malo.jpg
... while I was minding my photography business here by the open theater ...
IMG_5277 malo.jpg
... this little European robin (Erithacus rubecula) ...
IMG_5280 malo.jpg
... was jumping around, observing my work ...
IMG_5370 malo.jpg
... here you can see some contemporary teenage writings on the ancient stones ...
IMG_5394 malo.jpg
... and now ... I'm continuing downhill ...
IMG_5396 malo.jpg
... on the fresh green carpet ...
(Enlargeable)
... decorated with fallen flowers ...
IMG_5392 malo.jpg
... from the surrounding backyards and gardens ...
IMG_5397 malo.jpg
... of the old neighborhood ...
IMG_5400 malo.jpg
... that still preserves traces of the old Austro - hungarian atmosphere ...
IMG_5404 malo.jpg
... another defining period in Pula's history ...
IMG_4866 malo.jpg
... with this, the central theme of the post ... regarding the main fortress hill, is over ...
IMG_4805 samoMALO.jpg
... and for the rest of this photographic scroll ...
IMG_7717 malo.jpg
... I will ramble ...
IMG_4777 malo.jpg
... all around the old town ...
IMG_3599 malo.jpg
... in a relatively chaotic way ...
(Enlargeable)
... without a clear purpose ...
(Enlargeable)
... showing you ...
IMG_4776 malo.jpg
... unrelated street views ...
IMG_7718 malo.jpg
... and details ...
IMG_6006 malo.jpg
... that caught my attention ...
(Enlargeable)
... a view from the big elongated window of an old building ...
IMG_7713 malo.jpg
... a funny example of twin windows ...
P1900527 malo.jpg
... a green, self - seeding moment on some old wall ...
IMG_6002 malo.jpg
... a bird silhouette in the park ...
IMG_7716 malo.jpg
... a strange inter dimensional passage in the dirty small alley ...
IMG_6001 malo.jpg
... a long line of underwear sprouting from the old palace ...
IMG_0637 malo.jpg
... two similar facades ...
IMG_7720 malo.jpg
... from different neighborhoods ...
IMG_4876 malo.jpg
... walking through this street ...
IMG_4872 malo.jpg
... after I passed by ...
IMG_4874 malo.jpg
... this, not particularly happy - looking, building ...
IMG_4878 malo.jpg
... I came across this cat ...
IMG_4884 malo.jpg
... and a dish ...
IMG_4879 malo.jpg
... with a fish ...
IMG_4880 malo.jpg
... I mean the fish was only a picture ... an illusion ... and was funny to see the cat trying to catch it ...
IMG_4911 malo.jpg
... then I went to the area around the open market ...
IMG_4914 malo.jpg
... to spy on people there ...
IMG_4919 malo.jpg
... and collect ...
IMG_4617 malo.jpg
... a handful ...
IMG_4624 malo.jpg
... of street view shots more ...
IMG_4667 malo.jpg
... I don't know for sure ...
IMG_4640 malo.jpg
... I mean, I never got the diagnosis ...
IMG_4670 malo.jpg
... but I think that I'm slightly addicted on this kind of shooting ...
IMG_4595 malo.jpg
... I really like to do these easy walking shots ...
IMG_4668 malo.jpg
... hope you won't find them too much of the same ...
IMG_4597 malo.jpg
... or boring ...
(Enlargeable)
... here you can see a nice bunch of chimneys ...
IMG_0118 malo.jpg
... and here ... on another vertical composition, for a change ... is a rugged old building withe some cranes from the shipyard in the background ... to give you a bit of city's industrial, working - class atmosphere ...
IMG_4946 malo.jpg
... on this photograph ... is a nice old tree from the marketplace area ...
IMG_6004 malo.jpg
... another randomly selected rooftop ... if you didn't notice already ... I really like rooftops ... and chimneys ...
IMG_5415 malo.jpg
... and another one ... I mean, rooftop ... because I like rooftops … a lot ...
IMG_5411 malo.jpg
... but ...
IMG_5410 malo.jpg
... as you can see, there is a bit of action on this one ...
IMG_5413 malo.jpg
... so hopefully ...
IMG_5414 malo.jpg
... you'll find it more interesting than the usual empty rooftop ... that I'm usually serving you in these posts ... and now ...
IMG_4871 malo.jpg
... with this closing shot of the surrounding suburbia ... taken from one of the hills of the old town (you can see elements of some old buildings in the foreground) is time to end this post ... have a good day ... or night ... wherever on the planet you are ... as always in these posts on Steemit, all the photographs are my work ... THE END.
