The Upside Down - A photography project (a reflexion of the Medieval City of Ghent)
The Upside Down - Ghent
My photography project “TheUpsideDown” is inspired by the digital world we live in right now. The pictures sympbolise the vague line between the real world and the world seen through a screen.
Every picture in this serie is a reflexion of the real world.
The pictures are taken from water puddles formed on the streets. I turned the pictures upside down and toned the real world in black and white.
All the these pictures were taken in the beautiful city “Ghent”. It’s medieval look and feel are just in general very interesting to photograph. Although they’re thousand of pictures taken in Ghent every day, I wanted my pictures to be different and unique. This uniqueness is not only caused by displaying the pictures upside-down, but also because of the perspective. Because I took every picture from a water puddle, it gives the illusion I’m taken a picture from under the ground. What makes the perspective very interesting!
All the pictures tell a story about Ghent aswel. On the picture above you can see the famous stall where they sell "neuzekes", a is a well known cone-shaped raspberry flavoured Belgian candy.
The picture below shows the "Gravensteen", a beautiful medieval castle in the centre of the city. The castle was build in 1180! Inside is a museum with various torture devices that were historically used in Ghent.
The beautiful market place "Korenmarkt", surrounded by medieval buildings (all protected by the city). Right now there are building the annual Christmas-market, wich is absolutely gorgeous. I will most definitely wright a post about this market!
The Commercial street "Veldstraat" blended in with the medieval buildings and completely in cobblestone.

I loved working on this project, sending a message of our current digital situation through the story of a beautiful medieval city is just fascinating to me. In the future I'm thinking of repeating the same underlying message and technique but photograph it in a different situation/atmosphere.
I hope you like my project and you enjoyed the pictures.
Would be really cool if you let me know in the comments what you think. Or if you have any questions, shoot!
Until the next post!
