Mt. Rainier National Park- Sunrise Today
Mount Rainier National Park this morning.
Sunrise is the primary visitor area of Mount Rainier National Park on the northeast side of the mountain. It is named because of the spectacular views of the mountain at sunrise. We got there about 8 AM today, long after sunrise, but before the crowds arrived and while it was still cool. I was hiking with a non-birding friend, and didn't spend time trying to look for birds, but rather just enjoyed the hike and got primarily mammal photos, as they were much more obliging.
Hoary Marmots Marmota caligata were the most prominent mammal we saw. They are named for the frosty white patch on their back. They can grow pretty large, up to 15b pounds by the end of summer in preparation for their long hibernation.
We also saw lots of Golden-mantled Ground Squirrels. While we were up on the lookout tower at Fremont Lookout this one tried to find a way at the snacks in my backpack.

Overall a really nice hike on a beautiful day at Mt. Rainier.
Good birding. Steem on!
