SOUTH KOREA-Imressions #3-The city of SUWON & PALACE /PHOTOGRAPHY 55 photos/
Suwon is the capital of Gyeonggi Province, in northwestern South Korea. A beautiful town with very cute stores and beautiful architecture. It is known for the late-18th-century Hwaseong Fortress, with its commanding stone wall and 4 pagoda-topped arched gates. Here you will find photos from the Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, two small temples, and the city. I was there for a few days to teach painting workshops in a private academy.

There are a few temporary palaces in Korea, which were used for the royal family during war or traveling. This palace is the largest temporary palace, used by the Joseon kings since the time of King Jeongjo (r. 1776-1800).
In addition to being used as a shelter during wars, King Jeongjo also stayed here during trips to pray at his father's tomb. The palace was also a location for celebrations of many events.
Jangyongyeong guard ceremony is held at the front gate every Sunday from April to October.

The Fortress is the wall surrounding the centre of Suwon. It has a very sad and dramatic story.
This Korean fortress was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty to house and honour the remains of his father Prince Sado, who had been executed by being locked alive inside a rice chest by his own father King Yeongjo after failing to obey the command to commit suicide.
