MY LAST ADVENTURE ON OKPE, IMOKPA MOUNTAIN AND ITS MYSTERIES #Geologist dairy #Day 3
The study area for Day 3 lies within the Guinea Savannah vegetation belt characterized by short trees and tall grasses. The vegetation here is prominently made up of sparsely distributed trees, herbs, shrubs, and grasses.
The trees (mango and orange) help check the activities of erosion. Trees in this area are mostly concentrated along fracture zones within the plutonic.
The major occupation of the inhabitants of Igarra and its environs is mainly subsistence farming and the major crops produced are yams, cassava and pineapples, and other cash crops.
Most of the farming activities are carried out in the valleys which in most cases have loamy soils and also within a region that has a high water table. There is local quarrying of rocks such as quartzites and granites for construction work by the inhabitants.
So my fellow adventurers/geologists/traveller or friends let's unravel the mysteries on the mountain, if you are just joining us, you can follow up the dairy
LOCATION 1: IMOKPA MOUNTAIN (mystery solved)
ELEVATION: 392M above sea level
VEGETATION: The vegetation here is sparsely vegetated with big tree and shrubs.
RELIEF: The outcrop is a highland.
Rock Type: Granite, Schist, Pegmatite.
MINERAL COMPOSITION IN THE ROCK: Feldspar, Quartz,Mica.
SHAPE OF THE CRYSTAL: Euhedral, large crystal grain.
STRIKE: NE30ᵒSW.
DIP: 25ᵒ.
(Mystery solved)
A FOLD SEQUENCE WITH A SLIGHT DISTURBANCE.
ROCK DESCRIPTION
Presence of fracture, the fractures are not following the same trend. Presence of sinistral fault, displacement of a quartz-feldspatic vein measured 0-2 along the displacement plain.
Quartz-Feldspatic veins where found on the biotite granite.
Veins of quartz found.
ROCK NAME: Granite. (An igneous rock)
MINERAL COMPOSITION: Mica, Quartz, Feldspar.
STRIKE: 22ᵒNW.
DIP:30.
GRAIN SIZE: Euhedral (perfectly formed crystals).
A XENOLITH PATCH IN THE GNEISS.(Mystery solved)
What is a xenolith?
An inclusion or enclave of a pre-existing rock in an igneous rock. Xenoliths are often derived from the country rocks that have been invaded by the igneous mass, and they frequently show some evidence of reaction, e.g. rounding of their edges and metamorphism.
ROCK DESCRIPTION
Exfoliation (which means peeling of the rock) was found on this particular rock as a result of weathering.
A Xenolith patch of 220m was found in this outcrop , it’s an intrusion of Gneiss.
Xenolith in this area is Gneiss.
Climbing the mountain was just very easy no stress, just followed through a bush path, which the villagers constructed, it was fun all through, mystery solved, oya bring the camera!! Light!!! Action, this location is good for movie production, baby shower😘, pre wedding shoots, other cool stuff!
While taking this pictures, we saw a snake having a nice snack!!! Light camera action.
Thanks for joining in our adventure and mystery unraveling, Nigeria is blessed with natural resources, the land is green and fruitful.. God bless Nigeria, God bless Africa, God bless you.
