Elk are huge! They can also be bullies ! If you are in California in a National Park, the Elk there know people are not supposed to hurt them so they will act like jerks. I have been eyed as a bull elk deliberately walked in front of my car, I was a good distance from him when we first made eye contact and my car was moving!
