Sonargaon is an ancient township of Vranga called Swarnagram or Subarnagar. In the vast expanse of both sides of the Brahmaputra, there was a primitive community called the 'gold-born' nation. They were traditionally regarded as gold ornaments irrespective of men and women. It is believed that in the Mahabharata, the Kurupandab war was in existence and probably earlier this place was existed. The two traditional Hindu baths Langalband and Panchamighagh are situated on the west bank of the old Brahmaputra, bearing testimony of the ancient importance of this region. The ancient Surbarnagarh of the ancient region was surrounded by Meghna, Dhaleshwari in the south and Shitalakshya river in the west, and its northern boundary was extended to the Brahmaputra river on the northern edge of the modern Greater Dhaka district. In order to determine the location of this township in the modern geographical divisions, it is said that in ancient times the location of this township was in the region between Shitalakshya and Meghna which now spreads in greater parts of Narsingdi district and Narayanganj district.
