What have we turned into? What do you think our future looks like?

What you are looking at it a sculpture from the 10th Century which lies almost the remains of hoysaleswara temple at belur. Depicting an instance from an ancient war called the Kurukshetra from Hindu "mythology". If you look at the sculpture closely you will see that the elephant is holding a man upside down, pounding his head to the ground.

The beauty of this sculpture lies in its story but also in its immense complexity, size and detailing which is often ignored by the naked eye!

How big do you think this sculpture is?

Try guessing!

You sure about that?

Okay! Lets see for sure.

Anything more than 10 inches would simply be a wrong guess.

Lets not forget that this is a 1000 year old sculpture.

The elephant is 10 Inches from head to toe and the man close to 3 inches in height! Isn't that insane ?

Now look closer, What do you see?

The chain around the elephant is less than an inch, and that's not it !

The chain is not attached in between the legs of the elephant and you can pass a thin twig which shows that they are hollow and there are hundreds of them across this ancient site.

We have been told all our life that our predecessors used hammers and chisels to carve rock . Do you really think you can make such a small gap without hi tech machinery ?

Today thanks to advancement in technology, we got modern machinery like the electric chisels which vibrates at a very

high rate making it easy to break materials like wood and ivory. But it is still a challenge for someone using Electric chisel to cut through rock.

So how did someone carve something so intense at least 800 years ago? and it's not just 1 or 2 idols we find here but literally more than a hundred thousand of them! Every inch of the place is a piece of Art. It took at 11 days to do our complete shoot and it will probably take forever for us to decode them (but I really hope not).

Unfortunately this place is in real danger. It is till day ransacked by thieves and black market traders even after the invasions led by Alauddin Khilji during the 14th century A.D.

People who respected the workmanship are afraid to touch these figures and ruin its originality.

But barbaric visitors on the other hand, carve out names on the sculptures using chistles.

Well, now meet the worst of them!

They cut out these sculptures like a piece of cake and sell it on the black market. Frankly I don't know who or what's worse?

Like seriously! WTF is wrong with these people? We rage in anger if someone steps on our sandcastle by the beach and yet we let humans do so much damage to these structures. What have we turned into? From the greatest artists to disposable ransackers. If this is what we hold for the future trust me our doomsday is not so far ahead of us!

Here's what Kurukshetra would have looked like !

Sort:

When I see graffiti on the walls (and even windows) of beautiful buildings, I lose my hope for the future of humanity.

I have come to a sad conclusion that for as long as there are creators there will be destroyers . I hate most of the gravity these days.

I am impressed with the amount of detail that the sculpture has despite the small size it has, the art of the sculpture is very beautiful and allows to create beautiful works. War is one of the worst things that happens to this world. People who let themselves be carried away by anger, destroy pieces of art of a respite, not only human lives are lost but also a large part of the history of a country. Excellent post, greetings.

If they haven't used high tech machinery they prolly devoted their entire life towards it . I don't think they spent so much time on it as we suspect, they polly had a very different type of rock cutting or melting tech they used to do this. The confusing part is that there are 100s of such shrines like how the freaking hell

I always wonder how the sculptors in the past could be so precise and accurate at what they do and that too without any sort of modern equipment that we have today.

Just think of all the pieces of history we have destroyed because we were too careless to give a damn about them. All these artifacts are precious and we treat them as if it's nothing. That's just sad.

A true professional, very good job. And the best part is that you love your job

I work in tourism for 7 years in a gothic church. From year to year teenagers are worse and worse: they are loud, chewing gum, touching EVERYTHING, leaving litter everywhere...sometimes visit of 50 like those mentioned earlier it is like a nightmare. They don't respect nor holy place nor work of my workmates...Fortunately tourists season won't lasts forever....

I would frankly break their nose

Great point of view regarding how in the Past ... the real masons in stone could create such an amazing art and the most interesting thing how they've created to be so durable ...

Regarding the Future ... as a parallel between being sculptor or an artist in concept of Art/Music ... for me it's very simple :-) Nowadays in music almost everyone consider's himself a composer/musician just by using some samples of sounds which most of the time they're programmed so you can sustain one keyboard key and the arppegios are done :-)

People, nowadays don't know how to get out the essence from an acoustic instrument whitout technology :-)

That's why i do preffer to have all of my compositions created from real sound of wood instruments ... such as duduk, bulgarian kaval, turkish ney, saxophones, bansuri and many others.

This was the real Art in the Past on all the domains included in this vast platform/spectrum named Art :-)

The prime matter from which they've carved/sculptured/played was real wood/stone/copper/silver that was not destroyed thru chemical procedures like in our Days ...

Hopefully we'll be able to sustain this organic form of carving/sculpturing/playing organic thru all these forms.

We'll see ... Time's are changing ...

Have a Blessed Day @awakeningartist
