Inverse-Square Law

Soft Shadow
This is strange a little, but gives very soft and nice shadow, that I like to use in some portraits. The trick is - to place a light source as close as possible. You can see softbox corner, it is only about 10cm far of her nose. WHy ? Becouse doubling the light-to-subject distance reduces the light falling on the subject to one-quarter. This way, if a light source is just 10cm out of model nose, the light value on model cheek will be twice less than on a nose. And ~ four times less on model ear. This is that I call ...
"sliding shadow".

Light setup is about this schematic. It could be any kind of softbox or umbrella, or anything else... Just place it very close:
How does it work ? Oh.... there is a lot about this on Youtube. Just Just search
Inverse-square law
And one rule to remember: light is closer - shadow softer.

Thank you for the tip! It really does give a nice and soft shadow. I will it out myself soon! :)
Good luck :)
Interesting, I hadn't thought of placing the light-source so close, but it makes total sense thanks to your explanation.
