The old wooden ones are great. The leather can get brittle over time. I do have a pair. The new ones are so much lighter.
But I personally really like the wooden classic look.

I agree, it's a great look that the old ones have, they look great hanging up on the walls of a cabin. But you can't beat the lightness of the new ones for practical everyday use!
