On the first evening on our recent camping trip we went for a walk along Filey beach, the tide was out and the fishermen who work from Cobble Landing were bringing in their small boats known as Cobles, that's why in the first picture you can see a tractor sat in the breakers waiting for a boat to come in so it could be loaded onto a small trailer (little more than 2 wheels on an axle.) and pulled up onto the landing.
Boats have been launched from this site to fish the local waters for Sea Trout since Roman times in the 4th century, the catch would have served the Roman fort that was built on Filey Brigg above the bay. There are only about 6 or 7 boats now on the landing which go out from Monday to Friday during the season. Their licences are renewed each year but it is expected soon such licences will not be given. This will bring to an end a tradition that goes back around 1,500 years.
The local fishermen fear they may be the last generation to fish from the landing despite changes to their practice to ensure that they fish responsibly and are actually seeing fish stocks increase season on season.

This is a picture I took a few years ago from the cliffs above the landing showing the cobles sat on the landing.

There is a lot of history in that area. I hope the fishermen get to keep their licences to fish there. It would be a real shame to see it fade away into history.
