Holidays in Scavi di PompeisteemCreated with Sketch.

On the 24th August 79AD there was an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius which buried a city of Pompeii under a layer of volcanic ashes which was from 6 to 9 meters thick.

This catastrophe both destroyed the city and at the same time preserved it until nowadays, thus we were able to learn a lot about Ancient Rome times.

Last year I have visited Pompeii and explored the site myself. It was an unusual experience, I was both shocked by the details of the tragedy and charmed by the beauty of the city, as well as fascinated by the ability to explore such an ancient history, to feel the touch of ancient times.

Using the remains of people a lot can be learnt about everyday life of that time, up to such things as what people ate back then.

On a photo below a kitchen of that time is captured. There were a lot of those kitchens and they were placed everywhere along the streets.

This is a public toilet which is destroyed and essential parts are missing, but still, this was the only public toilet in Pompeii. As I recall it, the public toilet was only for use by men.

Obviously, under the ashes a lot of dead bodies of humans and animals were buried. When the soft tissues of those bodies decayed, a void occurred in that place. When during excavation archaeologists encountered such a void, they filled it with plaster and thus reconstructed the posture of people in the last minutes of their life.

And this is a recreated posture of a dog, who was chained to the floor in the house of its’ master and was not able to run away:
