Capturing emotion - How is it done?

in #photography7 years ago (edited)

Capturing raw emotion has been a HUGE topic for me lately. Understanding how to do this can be very challenging, and I'm still learning the best ways to do it, but here a list of tips and tricks I've learned along the way:

~Get to know your clients.

  • Are they outdoorsy or do they prefer the city?
  • Are they outspoken or more reserved?
  • Do they like to go on long hikes or prefer chilling at home and cuddling up to a movie?

~Let your clients get to know you.

  • This is SO important in order for you clients to feel comfortable around you.
  • Send them pictures of your dogs, take them out to dinner, let them inside your world.
  • Be confident in who you are and be as real as you can. This will help your clients do the same!

~Snap the picture during those "in between" moments.

  • Right after a cheesy joke has been told and they're laughing their heads off, take the picture.
  • When they're looking into eachothers eyes and almost "forget" you're there, take the picture.
  • When your clients are chasing eachother around and fooling off, take the picture.

All these things will help you capture that pure emotion with your clients. Remember you're creating together, not just the photographer. Professional images should capture the clients personality and who they are!
I was able to take this lovely couples pictures this past month and it was one of the funnest shoots I've been on. They we're able to open up to me and we had such a great time!

Thanks for reading a long,
