Buchstabenturm in Batumi / Batumi's Alphabetic Tower
Der 130 Meter hohe Buchstabenturm steht an der Hafeneinfahrt zur georgischen Stadt Batumi. Er stellt das georgische Alphabet dar - wer hätte es gedacht.
Der Turm an sich und auch die Aussicht vom Turm sind nicht das Beste an diesem Bauwerk. Interessanter ist die Geschichte hinter dem Turm, wonach die Schrift als genetisches Merkmal einer Nation anzusehen sei.
The 130 metre high letter tower stands at the entrance to the Georgian town of Batumi. It represents the Georgian alphabet - who would have thought it?
The tower itself and the view from the tower are not the best of this building. More interesting is the story behind the tower, according to which the script is a genetic trait of a nation.
Das georgische Alphabet
Es umfasst 33 Buchstaben. Jeder Buchstabe ist ein Phonem (bedeutungsunterscheidender Laut). Die georgische Schriftsprache gibt es seit dem 3. Jahrhundert vor unserer Zeitrechnung. Deren Buchstaben wurden sogar für territorial benachbarte Sprachen verwendet, so beispielsweise für Ossetisch, Abchasisch, Mingrelisch, Swanisch und Lasisch.

It contains 33 letters. Each letter is a phoneme (meaning discriminating sound). The Georgian written language has existed since the 3rd century BC. Their letters were even used for territorially neighbouring languages, such as Ossetian, Abkhazian, Mingrelian, Swanish and Lasic.
