Memorial Clock and Bell Tower

in #photograph7 years ago (edited)

History: The Memorial Clock and Bell Tower — standing 55 feet tall — in the Mead Rapids View Park on the Wisconsin River has a long history in the city of Wisconsin Rapids. It previously sat on top of the former city hall/public library on the corner of First Street North and Baker Street from 1892 until the building was razed in 1957. The area now is a parking lot for the Wood County Courthouse.

When plans were made to demolish the old city hall, Paul Gross of Wisconsin Rapids, along with a couple of friends, went up into the bell tower to check it out and see what needed to be done to save the clock. The first thing he did was take the seven-foot pendulum home for safekeeping. The clock was moved to the city garage, where it was stored for many years along with the pendulum Paul carefully placed with it.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of volunteers worked together to raise money to restore the clock and build the bell tower. Architect Jerry Feith of Wisconsin Rapids drew up the plans and estimated the group would need about $120,000 for the project.

The Bell Tower is concrete with Minnesota Rainbow granite accents. Work was started in 1990 and the dedication was in 1991. The clock and tower are dedicated to the early settlers and the Mead families for their commitment to the beautification of local riverbanks and parks.

Great pictures!
It's good that the clock and bell tower were kept safe, because it looks beautiful and there is history behind it.

Yes, that is very interesting to maintain a historical building. It is like we look time capsule when saw historical building.

I agree, I was thinking along those lines as well. Time capsules are very cool!
Thanks for your excellent comment!

you are welcome my friend ! :)

Thank you @nikolina, you are very kind. I agree, preserving history is important.
How are you today? Have you any sunburn? When do you return from Thailand?

I am great, woke up about an hour ago (it's 10:40am here), seems like it's going to rain so I'm thinking about what to do today... I got sunburn on my shoulders when I was at Koh Samui, it was very painful for few days but it's gone and now I am more careful, lol. I have a flight from Bangkok to Vienna on May 23rd and then catching a bus from Vienna to Novi Sad. That's probably going to be 2 days of traveling.
How are you doing?

LOL - it's exactly 12 hours later here, 10:45 PM. So I'm kinda exhausted and thinking about hitting the sack. Tomorrow I have some golfing in the morning. : )
I'm glad your sunburn is better!! That can be very painful, and near the equator it is so easy to get burned.
Wow, you have until May 23rd, that's a really nice long vacation! Two days on the bus?
On a rainy day maybe there is a museum or art gallery to check out? That would be awesome, and make a good post! Have a great day!!
ttyl - thanks for your commenting

Golfing sounds nice and relaxing, I've never tried it though.
2 days in total, flights and bus.
I was just looking at my Weather App, it says cloudy during the day and thunder storm in the evening/night.
