DAM DANGEROUS

Al Tech Spillway - West River Drive - Stevens Point, WI

The Al Tech Spillway is a low-head dam.
Low-head dams are a man-made obstruction typically built within a river or stream channel, and spanning from bank to bank.

There are many varieties of low-head dams on streams and rivers, they generally:

  • have water flowing across the entire length of the top of the dam
  • are from 1 to about 15 feet tall
  • store a minimal amount of water below the stream bank level
  • do not typically provide flood reduction storage.

These dangerous dams are known as "drowning machines." They are especially dangerous to individuals who recreate near them. Boaters can mistake them for tranquil and inviting water, however, even moderate flows over such dams create strong underwater circulating drafts that can push victims underwater.

Years ago we used to park here and attempt to drive golf balls across the river at this spillway. Recently I stopped and had lunch here, enjoying the view and a few photo's. ~ Paradise Found

You are welcome, my friend, I always support good publications

never heard or seen this before looks very dangerous indeed.

Yes, it is very dangerous. Even strong swimmers drown in this situation.
Thanks for your support @blazing!!

I have never been to a low-head dam before. It makes sense that they may be quite dangerous! Luckily you were on the on the bank!

Thank for visiting @sevinwilson!! I liked the photo's and thought it would make a good post. So upon researching I educated myself about these dangerous dams. They have big warnings up stream for boaters. But some people still miss the signs and pay a heavy price. I don't think we've had a incident recently though.

That reminds me of Niagara Falls where they have the warning signs for boaters and other individuals in the water far upstream! Were you ever successful in getting the golf balls across the water?

I believe we made it a few times. It's a long way! :-D

Haha that is incredible! I would love to try it, but know I wouldn't come close!

Woow this is really cool reminds me of upstate area and the dams there. They are dangerous you can't even tell where it goes down or how deep it is

Thank you my dear friend @journeyoflife!!
Yes, these dams are very dangerous.
If you make it past the warning signs and go over a dam like this you probably won't live.

Wow .. they shouldn't keep this open
