humpbacks have huge tails/flukes

in #photofeed6 years ago

Humpbacks are quite an unique whale that I constantly interact with whilst 'working' down on the Antarctic peninsula. So much in fact that after a few days of being down there with guests, they typically begin to say to me "Oh, it is just another Humpback whale". Honestly, I find myself thinking and saying the same thing after about a month or so of being down that part of the world, which is really a crappy thing to say.

They are a huge, gentle marine mammal that can stop time and make your heart race when you have a close encounter. A really cool thing about these guys is their flukes (their tail is known as a fluke in the whale world), as they have the largest flukes for their body size of any other whale species. It can be up to 5m|15ft across, which is huge considering the small vessels I am driving are only about 5m|15ft in length - just to be it in perspective for you. Of course you get to see this huge fluke on their last breathe, as they descend to the depths for a longer and deeper dive they will typically present their fluke into the air. Giving you a great opportunity to not only see this but to attempt to take a few photos along the way.
