Why is Bologna called the red, the learned and the fat ?
Why is Bologna called "the red"?
Was it a coincidence? Was the city colored by design of a renaissance city planner with artistic aspirations? Or does the pallet convey a hidden symbolic meaning of red being the color of courage, sacrifice, sin, pain, passion and anger?
It seems the nickname is due to the terracotta color of the brick buildings, but it is also a reflection of the left-leaning communist council which has governed the town since the end of the Second World War.
This picture is taken at Piazza Santo Stefano, considered one of the most romantic and at the same time most peculiar places in Bologna.
Why is Bologna called "the learned"?
Because Bologna is home to the oldest university in the Western world.
And of course, Bologna is called "the fat" due to its fabulous cuisine and the famous spaghetti "Bolognese".
Yours,
I.
