Oh man, definitely one of my favorite areas so far. Such cool landscape! We haven't actually done any Great Walks so far, all the huts are booked out way in advance and we haven't planned ahead that much. And it's kind of nice sticking to the less crowded trails anyways!
The great walks are amazing if you get the chance. Some of the best trekking in the world. But your right some of the so called 'lesser' hikes are also amazing. Sadly NZ is a lot more crowded than it was when I was 20 years ago before the social media boom .
