Changri Nup Glacier Porter
Every now and then life seems a bit tough; but then I think of these guys who carry over 90% of their body wight almost every day of the year for a tiny amount of pay by western standards. Perhaps a couple of US dollars per day. This porter is carrying a super heavy load up over the Changri Nup Glacier to Gorak Shep (5140m or 16863 ft). Nepalese Himalaya, Nepal. Shot on Fuji Velvia slide film.

About the same with the porters on Kilimanjaro. They make about $10/day if you go with an ethical company. It's standard to give them a tip of 100% or more. It's so important to seek out an organization that doesn't exploit porters, even if it costs you a little more.

Yes. The difference is these guys (and girls) are just working for the local villages rather than tourists as there is a whole network of ancient alpine villages in Nepal with no road access. So they make more like 1$ per day.
