tic toc — clock collection series
Time is measured
by the beats of a clock.
Seconds.
Minutes.
Hours.
Days.
Months.
Years.
Time means different things to different people.
It can refer to a tempo in a piece of music, an expression of multiplication, an event, a prison sentence, a life time, the conditions of an era and so on.
My husband is a writer and poet. He writes about time — time past, time future but rarely the present time. He finds the tick and tock of a clock relaxing. The Westminster Chimes on our grandfather clock sound every quarter hour, with the great bell every hour.
I've gotten used to the sounds over the years and I think I would miss the beats and off beats if they were gone.
I own many clocks. Many. I haven't counted. Not one clock shows the same time.
Some are wind up clocks with weights and chains and that need to be wound with a key. Several are more modern and require battery changes twice a year - spring ahead, fall back. One is a digital projection clock for the ceiling. I also own a few pocket watches, and some vintage wrist watches.
The pictured clock was given to my husband by our son and his son. They built it together and painted it as a Father's Day gift. It hangs proudly in our "green" room.
That looks like a pretty old one! Is that jar really "coal?" What is that used for? Nice work!
That's what I thought, too. It looks like it has been tick-tocking for a century :) The tick and tock would probably drive me crazy, though.
Glad to see that you finally started photographing your collection @countrygirl! I am sure you are very proud of your son and grandson for building this clock. Beautiful.
I bet you could stand Lego people on that bottom ledge, too... :-)
I think the Lego guys would like to hang from the pendulum???
I am sure they had nice bonding time. They did a very nice job of things hence they get the first post of the "series". I'm setting the next one up for next week. It will be a bunch of smaller clocks.
It's a coffee mug - I bought at some flea market a number of years ago. The logo on it is for a coal and grocery store in Niagara on the Lake. I looked it up but couldn't find any information as to it's existence.
The clock isn't old at all. It was built by my son and grandson. I painted it and "antiqued" it so it would look old.
Glad you liked it. Thanks @fotosdenada.
Very cool, and a fun project! The cup fits well with the antique look, too.
Ok when its bedtime, I am imaging this LOL...
lol....soooooooo true!!!!! Fortunately I grew up with one annoying tic toc clock. But my husband loves time and anything to do with time, hence the clocks. It bugggggggged me for a long time, much like snoring
doesdid.Perfect video. Maybe next post I'll add a mp3 of chimes so you can hear them as you read :)
Everyone is a collector but we are collecting different things. Clocks are amazing, each clock in different, has it's own personality and story to tell.
That clock is beautiful, shows the love of those who created it. I have a photo of my grandmother's clock, I am sure you would like it. :)
I'd love to see your grandmother's clock!!
This is a very special clock that my son and grandson built. I am going to bed....so tired now.
That was a beautiful gift of time from the heart! I love old clocks. My favourite clock though is one my husband had made for me out of oak and stained glass. It has the pendulum that makes a lovely tick tock sound, music to my ears.
It is pretty special. Id love to see your clock sometime - maybe you can take a photo of it and write a story??
When my new camera arrives! Watch out there will be photos and stories coming fast and furious...LOL
Did you win the camera???????
No, but @debralee is being really generous and sending me one. Hopefully, it won't get caught up in customs for too long...
Oh really?? How lovely!!! Can't wait for you to start snapping and sharing!
Good posting.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :)
Yes ofcurse
oh @countrygirl, this is so beautiful. The clock, I can't believe your son made this for you. Really sweet! While I was reading your post it brought to mind the metronome I used to have on my piano, that constant, even tick, tock ...soothing. Thank you for sharing this.
Yes, a metronome would definitely be similar. It can be annoying or soothing right?
It was a very sweet gift - actually for my husband (@johnjgeddes) He's the clock guy - I just end up collecting and cleaning them ... and now photographing them.
Thanks for such a nice comment.!
Your son and grandson made a beautiful clock!
Yes they did ..... thanks Deb.

Wow, what a beautiful piece there. You just made my day Ma. Time is always what we never have enough. Pass away so quickly. Just work hard to meet time luckily. Time is real expensive. When we have it we must make good use of it. Thanks a lot
Thank you too.
i've been thinking a lot about time lately. a lot.
i think because i was on vacation and had a different perception of time, and now im back - and it's changed again...
i love that your son and hubby made that clock together! they took the time - to make a piece that tells the time hehehehe
we also have a beautiful grandfather clock that chimes every 15 minutes. i love the ticking as well. it reminds me of a heartbeat :)
when i'm under stress... it makes me panic. one less second to complete something! LOL
but when i'm relaxed and enjoying the breath filling and leaving my lungs, and listening to the laughter of my children, and feeling the sun warm my skin through the window... the sound is like coins filling my jar.
another memory to add to the riches in my vault. and another. and another
love you friend :)
