THIS WAY TO THE MILKY WAY

in #photofeed6 years ago

I've been meaning to get a milky way photo from this location for years...

but it has to been done earlier in the year to line up nicely. This last weekend just so happened to have nice clear, and cold, skies, and I was able to get up to Bear Lake to get the photo.

I was a bit worried about the light pollution from the nearby cabins, but they didn't turn out too bad and even helped light the trees a bit.
One of my goals this year is to bring some awareness to the community of Garden City about light pollution. It's not awful, well at least not bad enough to obstruct the views of the stars, but with the incredible rate of growth in the area the last decade, I fear we may lose what many of us seek to find at our favorite weekend getaway. There are some pretty bad offenders though for light pollution, many of them being businesses and resorts.

I've got some other photos I'll be sharing that really shows how bad the light pollution is for a sleepy little vacation town, even in the off season.

I've helped the town of Eden, UT receive Dark Sky Accreditation, and I plan on doing the same for Garden City.

Nice shot, with a huge amount of details considering the light ;)

This is gorgeous!

Incredible shot. Crazy to think that some people will never get to see the milky way because light pollution. I love the effort that some places put in to help reduce the noise.
Look forward to getting down your way this Summer to enjoy some star gazing.

Congrats again with your success in helping with the Dark Sky Accredidation - I like that initiative and I'm glad you're a part of it. That said, I like how the light pollution on the trees make them look like they're orange and yellow from the fall colors, haha (or maybe it was a flashlight). Great photo! :D

No flashlight used, it was the multi colored lights from the house and streetlights nearby, it was a nice effect indeed, especially since their is no leaves on the trees.

Nice when that works out for the best!
