T9 Dialing is THE BEST way to Call People

in #phones7 years ago

So, I was talking to a friend the other day and in the middle of our conversation, he remembered that he had to call someone. He opened his contacts, clumsily typed the name of the person, thought about which number he had to call, and then finally called the person.

And all this time, I just looked at him like a normal human looks at a chimp doing something. Then when he was done calling, I asked him "dude do you even T9 Dial???" and his reaction was that of a small kid being asked to solve a complex maths problem.

And that's when I realised - I must spread the wisdom of this glorious method of calling people

So, after showing him T9 dialing, I decided to make a post here.

Ok, so as you can see in the screenshot, I have the digits "2782" typed. But the top suggestion is the number "123456789" with the name "Bruce Wayne"(totally not a fake contact).

Why is that the top suggestion???

Well, if you check the typed numbers, you'll see that the "2" key on the dialpad contains the letters "ABC". The first letter of "Bruce" is B, which is one of the 3 letters on this key. The "7" key contains "PQRS", out of which "R" is the second letter in "Bruce". The "8" key contains "TUV", out of which "U" is the third letter in "Bruce". Then, come back to the "2" key, which contains the letter "C", which the fourth letter in "Bruce".

Did you get it??? Did a bulb light up in your head?

So you press the number keys which contain the letters that make up your contact, and the phone searches for a combination of those letters and gives you a result.

The biggest advantage of this is that you have to think much less when typing on a number pad compared to typing on a full QWERTY keyboard. And in a lot of cases, you can get the right result even when you mess a few letters, which isn't the case of the Contacts search.

Another advantage is that you basically never have to use the Contacts app. Want to dial some random number? Do it with the phone app. Want to dial a contact? Dial it in the phone app with T9 Dialing. And when you have to do the same thing for both actions, it improves muscle memory.

So now that you have been endowed with the knowledge of T9 dialing, you may call people The Enlightened Way. Of course, if in your travels, you find someone who is not enlightened, who is still wandering around in the darkness of the Contacts app, always pass on this great bit of wisdom to them so they also see the light.

Note: T9 Dialing only works on Android Phones. If you have an iPhone, you are cursed and must wait until your next life(or until the next time you buy a phone) to get Enlightened. You may use the time you have in this life to yell at Apple for not providing this wonderful feature on its phones.

Thanks for reading this post. If you found it helpful, please resteem it so other people can get Enlightened.

Frankly (upvote aside), I don't see the advantage, but appreciate the information.

I thought the same way in the beginning, but once you build up the muscle memory, going in to the contacts app just feels slow

Clearly we now have a whole new generation who has never owned a non-smart phone where T9 and other dialing systems were essential.

Thanks for that article. I knew nothing about it. Very helpful indeed.
