RE: Can People Share Ownership of the Same Body?

in #philosophy7 years ago

An entertaining take on a complex subject.

If you haven't already read Daniel Dennett's Consciousness Explained - and have the time and inclination for a mental workout - I'd highly recommend it. He does a great job arguing how our sense of identity evolves out of purely materialistic happenings in the brain in wildly complicated, parallel patterns. I think he also discussed cases of twins who lived in such close proximity for so long that, he argued, they were really sharing one "mind" and one awareness of the world.

You read hardcore philosophy too? You're too cool!

I agree with Dennett on various topics, but free will and consciousness are not one (two?) of them! He always makes good points though.

Don't recall the twin example, but I guess that would jibe well with the article.

I feel like Dennett's a great one to engage with. I can't always follow him every step of the way but I like where he travels. Although I haven't read so much philosophy in recent years. Used to love it. I feel like my brain's slowing down a bit in middle age.
