These two are 2 of the greatest real stories I've seen in the modern times.
The case of the Mountain Man is very similar to the fable, in fact.
You are right, I don't want to sound like someone who promotes irresponsibility. It is in our hands to change the world.
But I think that if we try to cover more than what our hands allow us, then we simply can not. The subject who planted 1,360 acres of forest, if he were to assume all the global ecological problems, and believed that it only depends on him to solve them, then the first tree was not planted, because it was unmotivated. It could not cover so much.
But he realized that the only real way he has to change the world is to change himself and his environment, the little stones, in this way the 1,360 acre forest, which is very much for a single man, in fact is much for several, but nonetheless, it is little for the world.
He alone could not solve the world problem, but many people like him would be needed. That is why not carry the weight of the world, but only carry a part of it, which corresponds to you, and that varies in size depending on the people who carry it.
The simplest way to put it is: If it's raining, don't try to cover the skies. Just carry an umbrella.
You don't owe the world anything. You just owe yourself to live upto a certain standard with dignity. Individual salvation is an individual effort. Salvation of a community is a community effort. An individual can save himself/herself but a community cannot be forcefully enlightened. They'd have to learn prosperity or die by their own ignorance.
