The role of evolution in humans and human societies

in #philosophy4 years ago

One of the most interesting realizations that I have had about the evolution of the human (as of the societies in which we live) is that, evolution is not a process that is destined to turn us a "better version" of ourselves, is not always better today than yesterday, and we are not better than our ancestors simply because of evolution, because the objective of this is not to make ourselves better, but to make us adapt to the changes that life presents us.

That means that we can move in one direction by acquiring new capabilities, only to lose them again in the future if they are no longer beneficial. It is not a matter of improving ourselves little by little until we are perfect, but rather of changing as necessary to adapt to the surrounding reality. This is understood because there is no absolute perfection to which to tend, all animals are different, none better than others, each one is adapted according to their circumstances and their needs, and each one is perfect in its own way, that is to say, unimprovable, according to the conditions in which they live, but as they change, the animals gradually become useless. Think of jungle animals taken to the desert, or desert animals taken to arctic places. Evolution then occurs when these conditions change, little by little, and animals see the need to change with them.

The same that applies with the evolution of species, applies in any type of evolutionary process, such as that of society. It is natural to see many of the social conditions that we have today and believe that society is improving itself over time, that in the past we had worse societies and in the future we will be better, but the reality is that here, too, it is not about becoming better and achieving the perfect and archetypal society, but adapting to the needs of people and changing circumstances of reality. There is no perfect society or ideal political model that works always and every time, but as circumstances change and people's needs change, changes are necessary in the ways in which we organize ourselves.

Life is constant change, people change, their environment changes, reality changes, so it is impossible that there is a static model that is perfect on all occasions for all people, but on the contrary, what is better sometimes it is not always, what is good for some people is not for others, and what may have worked in the past may not work now, because everything is different.

Evolution then is not about becoming perfect, but about becoming just what is needed to face the present conditions of reality, even if that means returning to a state that we have been through before, because one is never better or worse but different.
