The Death of God and His Ideal God

Let's talk about about the philosophy of Nietzsche.

Nietzsche’s authentic objective is to make possible a creative and authentic life in a world without dogmatic belief. The death of dogma will not lead to the disintegration of one’s self, but rather will liberate one’s creative resources, repressed until now by morality.

It will open new horizons to new belief, but these will function solely as life-enhancing and self-crystallizing perspectives. Nietzsche proclaims

I’m looking for God! I’m looking for God! Since many of those did not believe in God were standing around together just then, he caused a great laughter… Thus they shouted and laughed one interrupting the other. The mad man jumped into their midst and pierced him with his eyes. Where is God? He cried; ‘I’ll tell you. We have killed him- you and I’ We are all his murderers… God, too, decomposed! God is dead! God remains dead! And we have killed him!..

This parable suggests the inappropriateness of the popular characterization of Nietzsche in debunking other people’s belief. Nietzsche proposes naturalistic in opposition to traditional religious views. The death of God is accompanied by indirect, nihilistic, and destructive ideal that must be overcome through the value of the Übermensch. Thus, Übermensch will be the one who will create another ideal god. Nietzsche further explains,

God is dead given the way of men; there may still be caves for thousands of years in which his shadow will be shown. And we still have to vanquish his shadow, too.

In the time of Nietzsche, the concept of Christian God was the only expression only of the highest ideal of Western Civilization. He has been led into the conclusion that God is dead because of the proper disposition of the development of modern sciences. Nietzsche says, Superman is the meaning of the earth, and it is the higher man.

Furthermore, Superman man cannot come unless superior individuals have the courage to transvalute all values, to break the old tables of values, especially the Christian tables, and create new values out of their super abundant life and power. The new values will give direction and a goal to the higher man. Nietzsche’s transvaluation of values is a new understanding of what evaluation is, a new way of looking at the phenomenon of morality in general. According to Nietzsche, morally adult man is to create his own system of values and to reject the stock morality of his group.

Superman for Nietzsche would not mean to debunk all dogmas and structures but only re-evaluate and re-standard it. Superman’s ideal god is not only a god created by his intellect but also a god based on his psychological and social aspect. His ideal god is neither an Apollonian element nor Dionysian element but the fusion between the two elements. Nietzsche assert,

Dionysian and Apollonian elements are present in man, and thus become Superman. Superman would affirm and value his being and finally his god. Apollonian principle is the principle of light, rationality, the collapse of order and boundaries whereas Dionysian is the principle of dark, irrationality, the collapse of order and boundaries

Nietzsche believes that a balance of these two principles is essential in order to have meaning of life. The Superman helps man to liberate himself from his own cruelty. The Superman preaches and leads man to what is real. Thus, Superman is a redeemer of man from alienation by the wrong idea of man towards God.
