If religion is not the opium of the masses, why does it create division?

in #philosophy6 years ago (edited)

Like Karl Marx, i believe religion is the opium of the masses. I have written about it here and you can read it to understand my point.

This simple line by Marx has been criticized by many people who think he is delusional. While they might have their points to counter Marx, i will simply point where he might be right considering the situation of things around the world and especially in Nigeria.

Opium, narcotic drug that is obtained from the unripe seedpods of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), a plant of the family Papaveraceae. Raw opium may be ground into a powder, sold as lumps, cakes, or bricks, or treated further to obtain derivatives such as morphine, codeine, and heroin. Source

From the above definition, it is clear that opium has the possibility to intoxicate people and an intoxicated person is logically not in his right senses.

If you think Marx statement is wrong, then ponder on the below posers.

If religion is not the opium of the masses, why is it that people of different 'faiths' cannot marry one another?

Ask a Muslim around you if he/she can marry a Christian then you will be surprised by his/her response. Is it a fight for superiority or we are just clueless about the realities around us.

The above can even be excused but you will be surprised to know that even same 'faith' cannot relate the way they should. I have heard people say they cannot marry those going to white garment churches! These people are 'Christians' but cannot marry themselves. Now you wonder if they are using different Holy Books? The Book is the same but the tenets are not and this could be a reason for the division.

Now should this be happening? Is it not humanity first before religion? Perhaps people need to be reminded that man created religion, religion does not create man. There is man first before religion. Man, in reality does not need religion to exist or survive but religion rely on man to be relevant. If this is the case, why can't we place humanity above these religions? If humanity becomes irrelevant, there wont be a religion anywhere.

Sometimes i wonder if God will ask us our religions to actually judge us (if there is anything like judgement day). Will He judge Buddhists, Islam, Christians, Taoists, Confucianists etc., separately? Why can't we focus on God instead of religion?

It is even funny when you hear them say 'we are serving the same God' yet they cannot be together! What is really the problem? Is it religion itself or man? That is, is it the case that man created a problem that is not there to divide human beings?

Why do we seem intoxicated by religion rather than the idea of God. I still believe religion divide people more than it joins them.

Your opinions would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time. Your boy @smyle the philosopher.

Bill Wilson wrote extensively on this very subject. He would argue (as would I) that blaming religion for the misdeeds of a small amount of people makes no sense. He compares religion to a forest. It is a misperception to say that the entire forest is ugly because a small amount of its trees have grown sick. So is religion.

Sure, you can blame religion for the misperceptions that small groups of people hild to be true.

A closer study would reveal that more often than not, religion helps people. It helps them integrate within their own communities and support one another. Religions also provide outreach to people in need. Some all over the world.

Then there are the people that make up a religion. The vast majority of which want to help other people.

Yes, it's true that some parts of the world aren't as accepting of other cultures and religions.....yet.

But I don't believe religion itself wants to divide any man or woman from God. Even if they belong to another religion. This is just another excuse, which man is really good at doing. We always want something or someone else to blame.
