A Philosophical Question About Love

in #philosophy8 years ago

Love is one word that almost everybody knows it meaning. By meaning, i do not mean holistic definition which is true for everybody. Like pain, happiness, joy, sadness etc, love is an emotional feeling which cannot be adequately explained. No matter how good you are, you cannot adequately define the word love. Even if you succeeded in defining it, the definition would be true for you and you alone.

Love is an expression! If you love someone, you show it! No matter how you try to hide it, it will always show itself. People have tried to argue that we have different kinds of love. According to the Greeks, there are six types of love and they are:

  • Eros, or sexual passion. The first kind of love was eros, named after the Greek god of fertility, and it represented the idea of sexual passion and desire.
  • Philia, or deep friendship.
  • Ludus, or playful love.
  • Agape, or love for everyone.
  • Pragma, or longstanding love.
  • Philautia, or love of the self.

Love as a word is something we all understand irrespective of the variance and the different definitions it has. Love is love!

Now, the most common 'love' or perhaps, what comes to our brain when the issue of love is raised is the feeling between two people in an intimate relationship (eros).  This brought about the idea behind my philosophical question which is:

If someone you loved was killed in front of you, but someone created a copy of them that was perfect right down to the atomic level, would they be the same person and would you love them just as much?

Hard one right? We need to look beyond the idea of a new being in front of us. This is someone we loved. If you claim you truly love someone, it means you will appreciate the opportunity to be with the person till eternity.

I think many people would love the idea of seeing that person back. Now the question is will you still love the new 'being' presented to you as your girlfriend or boyfriend with similar traits?

Can the feeling of having the person back trigger the former emotional feelings you had for her/him? Will you consider him/her the former boyfriend/girlfriend knowing fully well that your 'real' boyfriend/girlfriend was killed before you?

This is the question i will to have answers to.

Hello @smyle

Love as a word is something we all understand irrespective of the variance and the different definitions it has. Love is love!

You just nailed it here...i could remember back in the days in school. One guy who was full of himself that he would never fall in love.,beating his chest. But when the time was ripe, he didn't only fall in love, he cried like a baby for love. Thus particular paragraph as quoted above just captured the true definition of love.

Lols! Yes boss!

I have seen similar things before too. No matter how strong we claim to be, once we fall in love we become 'fools' and it is very hard to control😀

Your question is a very deep one, taking a cue from Angelina Jolie film Maleficient,

There is no true love kiss.

Though it was later shown that there is, but I believe that was all for act

I would say there is no true love. I personally will find it hard to accept the new being, and love her like my dead girlfriend. I believe many will find it hard to do too.

You must find a day to explain

  • Philia
  • Ludus
  • Agape
  • Pragma
  • Philautia

I am really interested in learning more of philosophy

Thanks for your tine brother! I will try to explain the terms in another post. Thanks

This is a hard nut to crack. I can't possibly love the mirage created by the new replica.

Love is attached to a personality and not the feelings

You are correct but before you is that 'same' person (replica). Perhaps, psychologically you will find it difficult to accept the reality that you are having same person in front of you.

Your point is noted brother! Thanks!

If someone you loved was killed in front of you, but someone created a copy of them that was perfect right down to the atomic level, would they be the same person and would you love them just as much?

I doubt if there can be an exact replica of someone, so there must be a difference. That means I cannot love the other the way I loved the first.

Lols! It is good to doubt but that cannot change the idea behind the writeup. You need to assume it is possible to have that replica first, then conceptualise on whether you can accept such 'reality' in from of you.

Thanks for your time brother.

Love love love

Love is a thing of mind and shown in act.
Love is all about give and take
Love is all about sacrifice
Love is all about committment.

Love is an expression! If you love someone, you show it! No matter how you try to hide it, it will always show itself.

No matter how hard one try to,if you love someone you will surely show it in deed.

Yeah! It's like flame!!!! You can't hide it.

Thanks for your time sir!

Love is love. The feeling is simply indescribable.

😀
I agree dear!

Nice one i learn't something today

Nice post.

The question is , does true love exist?

Fallacy of red herring!

I dont know what i would do if someone i love comes back again after being killed. I think its going to be pity i will feel for him or her, not love anymore. Its not going to be easy anymore

That is if you do not want the person badly. If your life is 'tied' to that person in a way you can't easily explain, you would treasure the opportunity of being with the person again.

Thanks for your time ma!
