Are You Looking For Spiritual Enlightenment?

in #philosophy6 years ago

You say you're looking for enlightenment and you're looking for something new? How can you ask for something when you don't know what it is?

If you think you know what you're going out to look for something to achieve enlightenment, then you're looking for something you already know, which would actually be the past. The ultimate reality could never be perceived by you. So you end up in a bind where you would then have to look for something you know nothing of. You will then realize you can't seek nothing and maybe then when you simply be, you might come to understand and experience enlightenment without trying to because only when we are content to not know are you ready to know.

For me, one of the more realistic approaches to enlightenment is that presented by Stephen Levine in which he describes it as "a gradual
awakening" in a book by the same name.

Interesting, I like the gradual awakening concept but for me I feel that waking up is sort of a snap realization. That's just how I feel about it though

There is certainly a tradition of the snap realization, so it may a 'different strokes for different folks' kind of thing.

I mean both are correct in a sense. I think the original snap realization you have to start with is that you know very little and that puts you far ahead of those who believe they know a lot

... only when we are content to not know are you ready to know. Thoughts?

Says who? It doesn't look like an obvious truth, although it looks like a familiar esoteric idea, maybe from a tradition that likes to hide its knowledge from the plebs. Of course people seeking out an unfamiliar area, without a map to hand, aren't going to know what to look for. But these days we have search engines and an indexed global internet. Most people aren't interested in things like their past lives, life between lives, their chakras, aura bodies and other parts of their extended anatomy, "golden cords" connecting people allowing transmission of thoughts and feelings, and so forth. But some are. Why deny them the opportunity to become more familiar with these things?

It's not a restriction we have placed it's just how it works. To know that you know nothing is how you can begin, it works the same way and it was derived by Plato from Socrates account

I agree that assuming one knows nothing is a good place to start with a new subject. I just took you literally, in that being content to not know implies -- to me -- no desire to know.

Well we can't fight desire because we cannot desire not to desire without desiring. So to that I say it's still playing the game one way or another. The game according to Alan Watts is you're God pretending not to be. That's why you're never the object of your own knowledge like how tongues don't taste themselves or a nose can't smell itself etc. What we can do is simply be and the way will come to you, it's impossible to seek out as one would only do so for the purposes of getting a one up on the universe which is very unenlightened

But how can one not play the game while still being a human being? Maybe an ascetic can live in a meditative trance on a mountaintop while his grateful acolytes bring him the few morsels of food and drink he permits himself. But a human in Western society, with family responsibilities?

You can not play the game by knowing your playing and playing it so well because you know it's a game

Ah. Playing the game unknowingly, which is the same as being played unknowingly, sure, almost everybody on Earth is caught up in that. There's the elites-versus-everyone-else game; and there's the game played by the spiritually-aware and the normal humans (elites included). "Versus" isn't appropriate for the spiritual game.

Exactly :) Alan Watts would say the world could be a drama and we can just dive into our roles because you can't not play on some level
