THE ART OF ZEN : The philosophy of Alan Watts 7
How often do friends Stumbleupon something that changes your whole perspective in life? ....Well I got to give it to @intrepidthinker, cause he is the very one who introduced me to Alan Watts !
Alan Wilson Watts was born January 6 1915 and passed away on November 16th 1973.He was most known for enlightening the western world to eastern philosophy, something I was unfamiliar with till the day I heard him speak . His words have a way of painting a picture in your mind that enables you to see beyond self , explaining conciseness and unveiling ego. If you have never read ,or heard his words , then your in for a treat. Today I will share a few quotes from his book "The art of ZEN " and leave you off with a link to hear him speak his wisdom.
-We feel that our actions are voluntary when they follow a decision and involuntary when they happen without decision. But if a decision itself were voluntary every decision would have to be preceded by a decision to decide - An infinite regression which fortunately does not occur. Oddly enough, if we had to decide to decide, we would not be free to decide.
- Zen Buddhism is a way and a view of life which does not belong to any of the formal categories of modern Western thought. It is not religion or philosophy; it is not a psychology or a type of science. It is an example of what is known in India and China as a “way of liberation,” and is similar in this respect to Taoism, Vedanta, and Yoga. As will soon be obvious, a way of liberation can have no positive definition. It has to be suggested by saying what it is not, somewhat as a sculptor reveals an image by the act of removing pieces of stone from a block.
- Since opposed principles, or ideologies, are irreconcilable, wars fought over principle will be wars of mutual annihilation. But wars fought for simple greed will be far less destructive, because the aggressor will be careful not to destroy what he is fighting to capture. Reasonable - that is, human - men will always be capable of compromise, but men who have dehumanized themselves by becoming the blind worshipers of an idea or an ideal are fanatics whose devotion to abstractions makes them the enemies of life.
There is so much about Alan Watts to know, there is no way I could give his story justice through just one post , but I can attempt a place to start .
This video above is called " The mind" .....I suggest if you ever feel the answers you seek are unobtainable, then take the time to listen to one of the most highly influential philosophers during the end of the last millennial.
Nice man!! Alan Watts is one of a kind. He has been expanding minds and helping guide people since before we were born. I remember I dropped him on you at a VERY vital moment. I'm thankful to know of his body of teachings. They are very powerful and definitely get your gears turning. I'm glad you posted this, people NEED to know about him.
Love me some Alan Watts, always.
I have listened to Alan Watts for years and recommend him to anyone with ears. I also would add the mystic Sadhguru to that same list of high quality people to absorb. And thank you for posting, I needed to listen to that audio (which is ironically posted on a platform filling our already filled minds with more thoughts). I'm going to go sit now.
