When did civilization become so uncivilized?

in #philosophy8 years ago

What happened to the glory days of common decency? When did we let pass our final hour of human kindness?
It seems all too often these days we direct our attention to the ills of society, we support and endorse all manner of perversion and foul acts regardless of the impact to humanity as a whole. We have lost ourselves to the blackness of our own greed and desperation. We gazed long into the abyss and let the abyss gaze back into us, we spent our lives fighting monsters unaware that we in turn became the monsters we once sought to destroy. We have been overtaken, but we are not defeated.
As one reads this, surely as i write it, the question on the minds of those still holding onto the last bit of light left in this world becomes: what can be done about all of this? And to you I say that the answer is simple.
DO NOT FEED THE TROLL!
Just as a high school bully feeds on the misfortune of their victims, so does the negativity of this world feed on the fears and anger of the population. Every time we turn our T.V.s to CNN or fox news, every time we share a story of dispair to social media, every time we criticize our brothers and sisters for not following the status quo, we tell the hate mongering so called "journalists" of the world to provide us with more content. We say "I approve of this war, this famine, this greed. Please media outlets, give us more. Always more."
To undo this damage will take time. It will not happen over night, nor this week, possibly not even this year. But it will happen. And it will happen because this change is a simple one. Something that everyone can get on board with. And it starts with just a pinch of positivity. Smile at the passing stranger, help those less fortunate, give your partner a bunch of flowers, tell your family members that you love them. And for God's sake, turn off the television.
It is a simple request; human kindness. A simple act or gesture of kindness could change someone's entire outlook on life. One small hug could save a life. And if we each hold these values to be true and apply ourselves to bettering our conditions, we can in fact change the world.
I leave you on this note, for all those saying that one man cannot change anything. A quote from "Cloud Atlas" (an excellent book and a great film).
"You say I am just one man, one small drop in an infinite ocean. But to you i say, what is the ocean if not a collection of small drops?"

Very good message, thank you for sharing this with us. Let's all try to bring some positive energy back into this world, full of greed and negativity.
