Philosophysm Daily - Mozi

Time for another wise man's teachings! Not mine, today's philosopher is Mozi (470-390 BCE)

Mozi was born shortly after the death of Confucius, and grew up surrounded by those teachings, eventually challenging them due to the cliquey nature of Confucianism's clan mentality.

This dude may have been the first Hippy to ever walk the earth! Mozi was all about equal love for all humans, regardless of their affiliations - he called this idea 'jian ai' (universal love). This philosophy later became known as Mohism and earned Mozi great esteem among some very high profile folks, because of this, Mohism is still a relevant way of life for many modern Chinese people.

Mozi beleived that all actions reciprocate relevant reaction, in other words, good deeds equal good times. He also stressed the importance of treating others as we'd want to be treated (sound familiar?).

Significant to Mozi's work was also his focus on implementing his ideas through the hierarchy of state/leadership. Equal love doesn't mean equal status, but when leaders adopt this way of life it lessens war and creates harmonious societies, at least that was Mozi's view, perhaps today's leaders missed the memo?
