Box Mentality: How we can only accept the unknown as long we can define it.

in #philosophy7 years ago

Be honest, be clear, be concrete, define yourself…
How hard aren’t we looking for some one who gets us? Who understands us? Who completes us? Yet, how resistant aren’t we to consider ourselves anything less than unique?

Do you believe in only having one love? Only one soulmate?
Regardless the number of people on earth: how much of a romantic are you to have the guts to say : "Yes, I believe in the one". Does that mean you believe in being a "one" yourself?

Then why do we not only have a past, just as much we have a present coloured with trying to box every single other person in the world?

Admitted, we seem to be more open to “50 shades of grey”, introducing terms as “intersexual”, “interracial”, “fluid”, “ambivert”,…
But wouldn’t you say these concepts, the necessity to label, only confirms our efforts to “box” everything and every one even more? Why can't we take a very big box, and leave it with that? Why do we need to categorize everything that's in the big box?

The “unknown” (differing from standard) used to be ignored, banished, punished, tortured, to even killed.
Currently, we are finally trying to recognise the beauty of variety, and more importantly: accepting the uncommon to be common.

But why is it we can only be accepting by defining?
Where does this urge to grasp everything and everyone come from? And why can we accept to not know everything, but we do have to understand everyone?

Thank you, I couldn't have said that better. I'm also a bit aversed by people trying to Label everything and everyone. I don't have a multiple personality, but I do have different ideas and moods each day. So stop putting me in drawers!!

Well, the simpe answer is, misunderstanding breeds fear. What we don't know makes us extremely uncomfortable. We ask questions like:

Is it bad or good?
What is the degree of bad or good?
If it is good, who is it good for? Same thing for bad.
Does it have monetary value? And if it does, I need to hoard it for myself.

And another 1000 other scenarios our wonderful mind can think up. Moreover, that is just your mind. Society also does its work to tell us what to think about what. Television, religion, parents, and friends all have part on how we view things. And they all say, everything needs it's nice little box with an even nicer rectangular label. That way, you can take comfort in knowing how to approach and manage this new thing.
