Phenomena That Occurs While We (Sleep)

in #philosophy6 years ago (edited)

There is a whole set of phenomena that occur during sleep and that remain an enigma for science. We can say that the dream in itself is something that we still do not fully understand. In fact, researchers still can not agree on the real role it plays in our lives.

There are a series of actions and processes that take place while we sleep. The exact reason for these phenomena occurring during sleep is unknown. Although there are hypotheses about this, there are still no definitive answers.

The truth is that we end up experiencing situations that are more or less absurd while we are asleep. Most of them are disturbing to us and cause us confusion, even if they have no consequences. What are these strange phenomena that occur during sleep? These are five of them.

"You fear the imagination. And to dreams even more. You fear the responsibility that can be derived from them. But you can not avoid sleeping. And if you sleep, you dream. When you are awake, you can restrain, more or less, the imagination. But dreams there is no way to control them. "
-Haruki Murakami-

1. Hypnotic hallucinations

Hypnotic or hypnagogic hallucinations are one of those strange phenomena that occur during sleep. Usually, they take place a little before we fall asleep. Sometimes they also occur in the transition between sleep and awakening.

They are visual, auditory or tactile hallucinations. They appear in completely mentally healthy people. Sometimes they have to do with pleasant images or perceptions and sometimes not. They are more frequent in children and are usually due to stress, alcohol consumption or are given as the fruit of an imaginative mind.

2. Speaking asleep, one of the phenomena that occur during sleep

When talking asleep is technically known as somniloquia. It is a very common phenomenon among children. It is estimated that up to 5% of adults speak asleep. Neither in the boys nor in the big ones represents a difficulty or deficiency.

In general, what the sleeping person says does not make sense. Sometimes they are reminiscent of the day or contents related to the dream you are having. It has not been possible to establish what is the cause for this to happen. Only in some cases is it related to stress.

3. Explosive head syndrome

Another of these enigmatic phenomena that occur during sleep is what was baptized as "head syndrome that explodes." It is a rare parasomnia whose symptoms were identified by the American physician Silas Weir in 1876, but it was not until 1989 when the description of this syndrome was published by Dr. JM Pearce in the Journal of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry.

The exploding head syndrome is that the person feels very vividly a rumble or an outburst while asleep. This awakens her.

Sometimes the person also sees sparks or lights and sometimes feels that he has difficulty breathing. It is an experience that terrifies people and significantly speeds up the heart rate.

The reasons why this phenomenon occurs are unknown. Some associate it with states of stress or with extreme fatigue. However, this has not been scientifically proven. What is known is that the syndrome is harmless to health.

4. Recurring dreams

Recurring dreams are those in which the dream content is repeated over and over again. That is to say that the same dream or that the circumstances are the same. Sometimes there is also continuity or development of situations that had been dreamed before.

Basically, psychologists agree on the fact that these types of dreams are a kind of call from the unconscious to pay attention to something that has not been resolved or has not been addressed. The reiteration of the content is like an inner voice that tries to be heard so that we can turn our eyes towards some aspect of our life.

5. "Deployments"

They are called "unfolding" and also "astral experiences". Although it is a neuropsychological phenomenon, popular beliefs and some charlatans have turned it into a kind of experience of the beyond. In reality it has nothing to do with the world of the paranormal, but with the functioning of the brain.

During these episodes the person feels that he is floating out of his body. Sometimes the body itself can be seen from the outside. They not only occur during sleep, but also under anesthesia, at moments before death or after excessive physical effort.

This happens when there are two feelings that conflict with each other. The brain gets confused and generates that experience of feeling outside your own body. It is somewhat similar to what occurs in the phenomenon of "phantom limbs", that is, sensations in limbs that have been amputated.

All these phenomena that occur during sleep continue to generate questions and are the object of study. We are still far from completely deciphering the logic and mechanisms with which the human brain operates. In addition, it is still fascinating to advance in the questions and answers for your enigmas.

WOW... excellent article!
I have dreams in which many things happen that bother me and that scare me and I had to learn to master dreams, it was necessary because I could not wake up as it would happen with anyone with a nightmare ... create a window through which to escape For example, it is an exit when I am trapped.
All this is because it was unbearable not to wake up even when I was so scared, so I became aware that it was a dream and I could not control myself like that.

the dreams are fantastic although there are some dreams that seem real at times I dream that someone is chasing me but no matter how hard I run I am in the same place.
