I've also experienced many that love the idea of decentralization but either get hung up on the "userbase" aspect or the "money" aspect. To me, those two are outweighed by what you mentioned "steem's security of no deletion status".
I suppose some people just enjoy the illusion of security that comes with having protected and safe thoughts and opinions about everything. Who will keep us in check if the government and corporations don't do it for us?
