Be Careful With What You Say, Words Are Powerful!

in #philosophy8 years ago (edited)

One of the most powerful method to defeat an enemy is to lower it's morale. Make it have a low self steem and take away its hope.

In fact one of the most effective form of torture is to take away all the feedback of human senses, leaving the tortured the feeling of utterly unspeakable helplessness.

Humanity is being subjected to the similar tactic by the adversaries of God. They slowly and methodically erode all vestige of our uniqueness. Persistently destroying our sign of being a special creation of God.

This is the time to fight back. We are special, and there are so much proof to attest to that.

One of these proof is the GIFT OF SPEECH. How so?

First let us recall this important Words from God Himself.

26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings; they will be like us and resemble us. - Genesis 1:26

Man is made in the LIKENESS of GOD.

It follows that WE HAVE all the qualities of God, although in a much lower level, but nevertheless powerful.

This God that we have, can bring things into existence BY JUST SPEAKING THE WORD! That's how powerful God and His spoken words are.

Being created in His likeness we also have powerful words! God even vouch that what HE HEARS from us, He will do it. Meaning that the power of our spoken words will be from God.

Numbers 14:28 (ESV) Say to them, 'As I live, declares the LORD, what you have said in my hearing I will do to you:

That is pretty strong, dont you think? We SAY IT OUT LOUD IT WILL BE DONE TO US. That is powerful! At the same time it should make us consider seriously, all the things that we speak. Remember it will be DONE TO US.

If we speak blessings, we will be blessed, it will happen. If we speak ill, then we bring curses to ourselves. It is a power of speech that we inherited from our Creator.

Christ attest to that power. There was this incident where they chanced upon a tree and finding no fruit he spoke about it to never again bear fruit and it dried at once to the amazement of his disciples. What did the Christ told them?? THEY CAN EVEN DO BETTER THAN THAT! They can SAY to a hill to throw itself into the sea and it will be done. They just have to believe. Other teachers do try to downgrade what Christ said by saying he was referring to something figuratively. No. The disciple saw a literal tree dried up right in front of their eyes. So it wil be pointless for Christ to tell them they can do much more and have it mean FIGURATIVELY. The incident can be found on Matthew 21:18-22.

Our spoken words are powerful. Moses once doubt that and he paid dearly for it. In the book of Numbers Chapter 20:8 Moses was commanded by God to "Speak to the rock". It was a simple command and Moses has been obedient to God for about 40++years by that time. What did he do? in Verse 11 it is written

"Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff."

Why? Why will an obedient man like Moses STRIKE TWICE a rock when he was commanded to SIMPLY SPEAK TO IT? God was angered with this action of Moses, causing him to lose the chance to enter the promised land, Moses died just before Israel entered into it.

What was wrong with what Moses did? It is the LACK OF FAITH, he doubted God that if he spoke to the rock, something will happen, Moses thought that something more forceful is needed than TALKING, he felt that 2 strikes will be better suited to make a rock give out water. While God clearly told him to JUST SPEAK TO THE ROCK.

it would have shown to the looking Israel how powerful SPEAKING is. It would have taught them the importance of paying attention to what they say. Speaking to the rock would have taught them the power of FAITH.

Another noteworthy incident regarding the importance and power of our spoken words can be understood if we consider what happened between ESAU, JACOB and their father ISAAC.

THE BLESSINGS OF ISAAC

23 He did not recognize Jacob, because his arms were hairy like Esau's. He was about to give him his blessing,
24 but asked again, "Are you really Esau?" "I am," he answered.
25 Isaac said, "Bring me some of the meat. After I eat it, I will give you my blessing." Jacob brought it to him, and he also brought him some wine to drink.
26 Then his father said to him, "Come closer and kiss me, son."
27 As he came up to kiss him, Isaac smelled his clothes - so he gave him his blessing. He said, "The pleasant smell of my son is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed.
28 May God give you dew from heaven and make your fields fertile! May he give you plenty of grain and wine!
29 May nations be your servants, and may peoples bow down before you. May you rule over all your relatives, and may your mother's descendants bow down before you. May those who curse you be cursed, and may those who bless you be blessed."
30 Isaac finished giving his blessing, and as soon as Jacob left, his brother Esau came in from hunting.
31 He also cooked some tasty food and took it to his father. He said, "Please, father, sit up and eat some of the meat that I have brought you, so that you can give me your blessing."
32 "Who are you?" Isaac asked. "Your older son Esau," he answered.
33 Isaac began to tremble and shake all over, and he asked, "Who was it, then, who killed an animal and brought it to me? I ate it just before you came. I gave him my final blessing, and so it is his forever."
34 When Esau heard this, he cried out loudly and bitterly and said, "Give me your blessing also, father!"
35 Isaac answered, "Your brother came and deceived me. He has taken away your blessing."
36 Esau said, "This is the second time that he has cheated me. No wonder his name is Jacob. He took my rights as the first-born son, and now he has taken away my blessing. Haven't you saved a blessing for me?"
37 Isaac answered, "I have already made him master over you, and I have made all his relatives his slaves. I have given him grain and wine. Now there is nothing that I can do for you, son!"
38 Esau continued to plead with his father: "Do you have only one blessing, father? Bless me too, father!" He began to cry.
39 Then Isaac said to him, "No dew from heaven for you, No fertile fields for you.
40 You will live by your sword, But be your brother's slave. Yet when you rebel, You will break away from his control."
41 Esau hated Jacob, because his father had given Jacob the blessing. He thought, "The time to mourn my father's death is near; then I will kill Jacob."- GENESIS 27:23-41

Isaac is soon to die, his two sons Esau(first born son) and Jacob are competing for his blessings, Jacob's mother made a way so that Jacob will get the blessings that is meant for the first born son of the family. (Actually it is just right that Jacob get that blessings because Esau have sold the first-born-son-right to Jacob for a bowl of soup before). Our interest in this particular passages is the fact that AFTER ISAAC have uttered his blessings for Jacob. He said that he cannot give the same blessings anymore to an insistent crying son, even though Isaac have no knowledge whatsoever that Esau have already sold that right to Jacob. Giving Esau some sort of maledictions instead of blessings.

This shows how clear to Isaac the presence of his God. That whatever he have already SAID, cannot be taken back, it has already propagated into our environment and have already affected all future happenings (have you seen the movie BUTTERFLY EFFECT?) thus it would be futile to take them back. God has already heard it and as He promised, will do as He heard it to the one who spoke. In this regard to make it come true as Isaac has blessed Jacob.

Butterfly Effect

We are special, our spoken words are powerful.

It is fitting that we use this power wisely. If we have the habit of speaking carelessly, our mouth spewing hurtful words to the feelings of those around us, we are actually bringing curses to ourselves, eventually we will hit the effect when it do come around. By then we can only wonder, why we are experiencing such bad incidents? Not fully aware that we have spoken such negative things before and reaping its fruits.

Much like:"Be careful what you wish for, because you will get it."

The fact that among all living physical creations of God, only MAN have the ability of speech will also give us a hint of how special we really are.

If we can realize and appreciate how powerful we are even in speech. Then it will be a lot harder for the evil agents to convince us that we are just a passing shadow and our lives have not much worth. It will be hard for them to make us give up. And we will have more reason to strive to find our REAL PURPOSE. As worthy powerful sons of God.

Wow. This is very insightful. Thanks

stan, I'm glad you feel that way. if ever there come's a time, you don't liked the content or the idea in my post, just comment, I love a sensible conversation.

I very much agree with your point, words are powerful. It may be best to think before you speak, and generally try to be uplifting. You did a great job of illustrating your point with scripture, but I think people can agree with the basic idea, whatever their religious beliefs are. Nice article!

Thanks, I appreciate your well thought out comment.
