Paying more for organic food, to stay healthy has never made sense, so let's take a look at the underlying causes. Are you paying for organic foods? Just do the math!

The USDA's Synthetic Oversight of Organic Food

As an ongoing lawsuit makes clear, the regulations are a joke. How do we fix them?

October 22, 2016 | The case,  filed last year by more than a dozen groups, challenges changes to the  procedures under which the agency determines whether certain synthetic  substances may continue to be used in food the agency permits to be  labeled as organic. 

Under the Organic Foods Production Act of 1990,  which gave the USDA authority over organic-food labeling, the agency  maintains a list of synthetic substances that may be used in organic  products. Decisions about any substance on the list had been forced to  sunset after five years unless two-thirds of the agency's National  Organic Standards Board (NOSB) recommended a given substance remain on  the list.  But the USDA changed the rules in 2013, delegating much of the  decisionmaking power over synthetic substances to a NOSB subcommittee.  Since that time, the plaintiffs in the lawsuit argue that this USDA inaction "has allowed more than 20 synthetic substances to continue being used in organic agriculture." The lawsuit, which alleges "the USDA promulgated the regulation  without providing the public the opportunity for notice and comment and  acted in an arbitrary and capricious manner[,]" is just the latest in a  string of litigation and controversy surrounding the agency's oversight  of organic-food labeling.  Global Tribunal Concludes that Monsanto is Probably Guilty of Ecocide and War Crimes

April 23, 2017   |  A collaborative group that formed an international tribunal to  address accusations of ecocide and human rights violations toward  industrial agricultural giant Monsanto issued its findings in a recently  released ruling. The Monsanto Tribunal describes its organization as “an international  civil society initiative to hold Monsanto accountable for human rights  violations, for crimes against humanity, and for ecocide.” The tribunal,  which is comprised of numerous individuals largely from backgrounds in  agricultural activism, was formed  to “allow for an open deliberation on the company’s policies and their  impacts.” The Monsanto Tribunal held hearings over two days last October  in which dozens of witnesses from across the globe provided testimony. Nov 2016 | .....  Produce and go broke anyway!  While many, who do not grasp the ill-effects linked to our food chain,  might think that it would be easier to sue corporations all together to  resolve the outrageous conundrum, it doesn’t work that way as  multinationals operate for profits. Food retailers have the habit to  shift their losses onto consumers, all of which in the form of  inflation. Additionally, retailers also contribute to waste as a result  of their contractual arrangements with suppliers. Failure to supply  agreed quantities renders farmers or processors liable to have their  contracts canceled. As a consequence, they plan to produce more than  actually required to meet the contract, to have a margin of error.  Surplus production is often simply disposed.  Such coercive business attitudes make it easy to figure out why farmers  and retailers too cause food spikes. They too have commitments to meet.  Sure, there are other deceiving and irrational factors behind price  hikes -such as unnecessary strict sell-by dates, buy-one-get-one free  and the demand for cosmetically perfect food – but if supermarkets throw  out food or donate it to food banks, at the end of the day, it really  wouldn’t make any difference: they must keep Wall Street Shareholders  happy. By the way, the not so appealing edible foods cost America $160bn  yearly. Reporting honestly such staggering losses would cause a global  stock market crash overnight. The fear factor helps evil prosper.  Lawmakers as well as consumers want to keep their jobs. So, until this  unsustainable framework collapses under its own weight, lies and food  inflation are here to stay, it is just too bad for consumers. To add to  the injury, let’s keep in the back of our minds that the ‘conventionally  grown’ label implies GMOs and the heavy use of pesticides. But don’t  you worry, Queen Elizabeth and Obama have their own organic gardens since 2009.....  

 A Closer Look At The Global Madness.  Using 2011 retail prices, the avoidable food waste in the United States  (for the year 2009) has a total retail value of 197.7 billion USD.  Consumer waste alone amounts to 124.1 billion USD, or nearly 63 percent  of the total retail value of wasted food (Venkat 2011).  Danielle Nierenberg co-project director of the Worldwatch Institute  contends that 31 million tons end in landfills or incinerators each  year. That’s roughly equivalent to the weight of 74 Golden Gate bridges!  .....  Same gloomy picture in the UK and EU.  One-fifth of what households buy ends up as waste, and around 60% of  that could have been eaten, according to a report from the government’s  waste advisory group, Wrap. (theguardian.com/environment/2013).  In Britain every year 18 million tonnes of food still perfectly edible  are thrown away by households alone for an annual retail value cost of  14 billion pounds: at the same time 4 million people in the UK do not  have access to a healthy diet (zerowasteeurope.eu/2010/12). Wasting food and hunger side by side is scandalous.  In France only, each citizen throws away every year 7kgs of food still  in the original package when in the same country, 8 million people are  at risk of poverty....  As  China has enjoyed a boom over the past two decades, food waste has too  become a major concern. According to WorldWatch Institute, more than $32  billion of food is thrown away in China annually, although 128 million  Chinese live below the poverty line and often lack sufficient food .... EARTH CUSTODIANS COMMENT:   The Problem With The Organic Boom  -  For  Earth Custodians, the main concern is to address the subjective  distortion liking value to health. Such a widespread consensus must be  rejected at all cost, literally. Paying more to stay healthy is eugenics  in disguise. That would mean the legalization of being coerced into  suicide if one cannot afford organic. Every time we buy organic we should keep in mind that we  encourage speculation. The monetization of food — the gift of life —  is what led us to the brink in the first place. A social structure  putting emphasis on ‘Life First’ understands that the natural law of  C.A.R.E is key to establish and achieve a peaceful society. Paying to  have the right to live is an aberration caused by the mindset that money  buys freedom and that borrowing our future buys prosperity.
