Deep End of the Pool: The Way of The Forking Path AKA Symbiosis (old rambling glimpse into my soul) - circa 2001

in #philosophy8 years ago (edited)

I was asked to share more about my idea on symbiosis. I am digging through old writings and sharing things here on steemit I have never shared with anyone. (perhaps with good reason - laugh)

I can tell I wrote this document FOR MYSELF. It was a note to me, from me. So it does give a rather personal look into some of my core beliefs.

I made a document that was about paradigms I thought were worthy and it was broken into three parts.

  • Moral teachings and ideas I saw value in when I wrote this
  • A preamble about the Forking path
  • Some bullet points to always remember when reading this. They were intended as reminders for me.

Rules and Quotes that make sense

Here I have taken rules and quotes from various places and expanded them. Some of them I made up.

    • Learn to heal before learning to hurt, likewise teach to heal before teaching to hurt.
    • When making a choice choose the hard path instead of the easy path. It is on the hard path that we are shaped and prepared to deal with life.
    • If an action hurts no one then do as you like. Keep in mind that you can indirectly hurt people through your actions. Carefully consider your actions before taking them.
    • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Do not expect them to treat you that way in return for your actions. Focus on treating people the way you wish to be treated. They themselves must find their own path. If they do treat you as you have treated them then accept it whether it be a good or evil act. After all, if you can do things to someone do not be surprised when they do so to you.
    • All beliefs are valid to the individual. Seek not to force your beliefs on another and simply share them when someone is interested.
    • Judge not lest you yourself would be judged. You will never understand completely the motivations another person lives by. Judge them by their actions if you must but, never by their beliefs. Understand that when you scrutinize and judge another person then they themselves may be doing the same to you.
    • Never forget you are human and what that means. We are fallible. Therefore, EVERY belief you have can potentially be wrong. Be prepared to grow with your beliefs and change them to fit your changing understanding of reality.
    • Religion is only a part of your beliefs. All your beliefs fall under the label of your paradigm. Be prepared to change your paradigm as you learn.
    • You will never completely believe as another human does so, quit trying to. Listen to what others may share with you and incorporate things that work for you into your own paradigm. Let no other try to remake you into their own image. You are your own person.
    • Hurt others only when by doing so you prevent greater hurt to them or those around them. Do not use this to justify doing medical experimentation to prevent greater harm to the masses. Instead use it when by hurting someone you are directly preventing them from doing greater harm to someone else.
    • Belief is a powerful force. We do not understand all the aspects of belief. There is evidence it can help with healing. There is a definite psychological power in belief. Therefore, show respect for the power it has and what it may do that you yourself do not understand. Negative thoughts cast negative energy. Positive thoughts cast positive energy. This is true even from the purely psychological standing. DON’T BE A DOOMSAYER. A doomsayer aids the event they fear rather than aiding in the prevention.
    • Perfection is an unattainable state for a good reason. It is to overcome imperfections, hardships, and to strive to meet needs that we live. You can link EVERY action to overcoming something. In the state of perfection you would no longer have needs, no longer have motivations, and no longer have the joys of surmounting your problems. It is good to strive to self improvement but, one should always realize that perfection is an ideal to strive for yet it will never be attained.
    • Immortality exists only in your ideas, actions, and creations. Leaving your mark on the world is how you will be immortal. This too has two paths, the easy and the hard. The easy part is to do an evil act that makes you immortal through infamy. The hard path is to create and present the world with new and wonderful things. To take the easy path in this particular issue is to forsake every other ideal that is discussed here.
    • Creation is more impressive than destruction. Society is often more impressed with how skilled an individual is at some form of destruction. Unfortunately it is much easier to destroy a thing than it is to create a thing. Therefore, more respect should be held for creation than for destruction.

The Way of The Forking Path

A continuing ideal in this belief system, which will be referred to as symbiosis, is the idea that there are always at least two paths to take in any decision. These two paths are the easy path, also known as the path of least resistance, and the hard path. This is not to indicate that in some choices there may be more than two choices. The ideology of symbiosis is that we should consider the choices available to us before immediately taking the path of least resistance. This path often leads to ruin and folly. This path on occasion can be the best choice. Unfortunately, through our beliefs and ideologies we have been raised on we rarely consider the path of difficulty as an option. The first step towards symbiosis is to consider the difficult path and unless you can think of a good reason not to take that path, take it. To understand why you would want to take the difficult path look at these examples of things occurring in our cultures today.

Drug usage is a problem in many societies around the world. When used properly most drugs have appropriate times and places for them to be used. Unfortunately, for the youth of many cultures these drugs have come to represent the easier path at a juncture in their life where taking the difficult path is extremely important. The opportunity to investigate the effects of the drugs comes upon them during a time in life where they are seeking their calling. This is a time in their life when they are looking for what it is they are good at and what they would like to do with their life. This stage in life can be full of boredom and frustration over inactivity. The youth may not have found something to satisfy them during these times of inactivity. They are seeking. During their adventure to find what it is they are meant to do they eventually reach a fork in the path. Down one path is the continued search for who they are and who they will be. Down the other path is the opportunity to take substances that quickly alleviate the boredom of this search. Down the hard path the youth will continue to search until they eventually find themselves. Down the easy path they can be provided with chemicals, plants, or drinks that will fill the void they seek to fill. The youth that reaches the end of the hard path will never again have to worry about boredom and inactivity as they will have found something that they always enjoy doing. The youth who walks the easy path will be occupied during the periods that drugs are available. When they drugs are not available they will again be offered the opportunity to walk the hard path. It is apparent that as one walks the easy path it only becomes easier and easier for them to again choose that path. This brings another popular argument, which represents yet another aspect of this same fork in the path.

Many drug users indicate the spiritual awakening provided through drug use. This may in fact be true but it is also true that these same states of spiritual awareness can be achieved without the aid of drugs. Once again the choice is made at a junction in the path. The drugs are the easy path and represent spiritual awareness with little or no control over the state. Practice, meditation, prayer, and other techniques used by spiritualists around the world represent the hard path. It is more difficult to become spiritually aware without the aid of drugs. This difficult path offers the ultimate chance for understanding and control over the awareness. In this particular arena of spiritualism the spiritualist treading the difficult path will reach the point attained by those walking the easy path and will not stop where that path ends. The easy path ends at a state of awareness induced by drugs. The spiritualist who can find this state of awareness without the use of drugs can walk beyond this state into areas of understanding that are unattainable through drug usage. A final note of warning is offered concerning this particular junction. The easy path represents the dabbling in spiritualism through a medium which the would be spiritualist has little or no control over. This can be mentally damaging and dangerous. Control of your own personal beliefs is important. Learning spiritualism without complete control of who you are and what you think can only lead to a partial understanding of what it is sought.

Keep these things in mind when reading this

    • You are human and therefore fallible. Do not dwell on your past and things you have done that you are not proud of. Do not make excuses for your mistakes. The only true failing you should ever be ashamed of is if you do not take the opportunity to learn from mistakes you have made. If anything written here in touches on areas in your past or day to day life that you may not be proud of then understand they are not designed as an arrow aimed for your heart but, purely presented in such a way to offer the ideas to you. What you choose to do with these ideas is completely up to you.
    • Take anything that works for you of these ideas and do not take the ideas that do not work for you. Pick and choose. Hopefully, you will benefit from most of these ideas in one way or another.
    • These ideas originated with humans and are therefore fallible. Do not try to read divine messages into these ideas. If it makes you more comfortable to do so then that is your choice. It is important that these ideas are not forced upon people but, given as a gift to be accepted, criticized, or rejected. All ideas written here should be scrutinized by you carefully to insure they work for you. It does not matter if they work for others or not. How do they help you to understand yourself?
    • Some sections of these ideas may dwell on spiritual or mystical topics. As with all other sections these ideas are potentially incorrect. In fact these sections are often based on hypothetical situations, theories, and other ideas stemming from events witnessed, read, researched, or passed down from others. Since, these ideas dwell in areas that are very difficult for us to prove at the knowledge and technological state we humans are at as this is being written it is important that you consider these ideas and then discount them, improve on them, and use them as potential tools to take them beyond the realm of theory. If any of these ideas help us to discover answers then they will have done their job. Do not bypass these sections as there are some interesting ideas, and stories.
    • Get thinking. These ideas are to stimulate and free you. If they cause you to begin developing your own ideas and theories then they are taking you in the right direction.
    • Fear. Frank Herbert said it best. “Fear is the mind killer” Fear is a good thing if you feel it and still can act on your own. It is a bad thing when you let your fear rule you. If any ideas make you afraid that is okay. Fear can be a good thing and can be a warning system that will save you countless times over. However, if you fear an idea and let your fear rule you to the extent you no longer listen to the idea then you will be doomed to miss many opportunities.

    Conclusion for steemit

I know what this was about now that I have retranscribed it here. In an article on Esoterica I wrote earlier in the week I mentioned Symbiosis as my attempt to come up with a software patch like thing that could enable all religions to tolerate and accept each other.

I approached this much like a text. Yet my fear of writing any text has always been a strong desire to NOT create a religion. Yet that is likely what would happen with something like this. People would start following it and I'd be a David Karesh, Jim Jones, etc cult leader and if enough people believe it, it would become a religion.

I NEVER wanted that. I am not a fan of written religion. So that is ultimately why I did not continue writing the things I intended to be in this. This is an example of how that work would have begun though.

So this IS the document (there may be others) that someone asked me to share.

EDIT: I had not heard of Unitarian Universalists when I wrote that. They exist, they have churches and their goal was to allow all faiths to come to church as one. That was kind of what I was seeking though without requiring a church.

I also had never heard of Deism which is a shame. That is ultimately the place to which I am most drawn.
