There is an Old African saying that goes like this

What an old man sees sitting down,a child won't be able to see even if he climbs to the top of the highest mountain.

There is a Wisdom that comes with advanced age that can only be gained from experiencing the curves, arrows and sweets that life has thrown at him/her over the course of his/her long life and if adopted by the youth would forestall needless difficulties . This Virgin Islands quote perfectly sums it up below

A new broom sweeps clean but an old broom knows the corners.

Knowing this we should not discount the wisdom of our elders. As they are a gold mine of information that will continue to be relevant now and in the later years despite the advancement in science, technology and the arts.

Hence the need for mentorship to guide us through the complex maze of uncertainty and confusion so as to avoid costly mistakes and cut down on the learning curve by borrowing from their rich store of knowledge and where it requires modification to fit the changing times, we upgrade accordingly.

Even though there is always the tendency to rebel against the old ways of doing things. We always come full circle and realize some things are better left unchanged

Sometimes it is necessary to learn by making mistakes like the prodigal son because mistakes can prove to be a great teacher contributing an invaluable lesson to it's student.

Only by listening to the words of the elders. Can we truly stand on the shoulders of giants.

Wow, great thoughts here. I think it's sad how we sometimes feel each generation must reinvent the wheel. A careful dialog with older generations can not only bring their wisdom forward, but help them to embrace technologies and innovations that can make their lives richer, even late in the game.
