Is Choice An Illusion?

in #philosophy7 years ago (edited)

We all spend our lives following standards set by a hierarchy of leaders, whether it be parents, the government, or God if you are religious.

Do we have free will?

We may think we have free choice in what we do with our lives and we don't have to conform to the standards set by society; so we can do what we like right?

Yes, you can deviate from the path of standards, but any deviation will have negative consequences.

So, if our lives are spent just following a system of commands and standards, then choice is merely an illusion.

Choice is an illusion

We operate under the notion of freedom, made to feel real as possible; that is the engine of reality after all.

A baseless concept, yet impossible to comprehend at the same time.

Even the discussion about choice is a mechanical function; rendering any thought, any action, void of originality in the truest sense of the term.

Here is a video if you want to look into this further:

What are your thoughts on this?

What worries me is the voting slider illusion! :D

Really interesting concept I've always wondered about this!

haha, great to see you in awe

Isnt Reality an illusion?
But i agree and often wonder the same because of cause and effect and because energy cannot be created or destroyed which means the universe is enternal and if it is that means that this probably already happened once and will happen again.

Im atheist so i find it fascinating that i accept that their is no intelligent design but at the sametime contemplate if were nothing more than the product of molecular and cellular computation.

If 1+1=2 and 2 hydrogen an one oxygen come together you get water......whose to say the next big bang wont be a repeat of this universe

I'm glad that you agree and you enjoy this sort of stuff.

Nice post. I like the way Nietzsche wrote about the subject. He says that there is neither free nor unfree will. There is just a strong or a weak will working in the direction of the will of life or will of growth. It is really hard to grasp it in a view words but it is wearth to read it. I follow ou for more philosophical debates.

You can look back at some of my other philosophical posts if you find this interesting.
I'll have a look into Nietzsche
