The Importance Of Knowing The Situation

I believe that as humans, we find feeling other's pain much easier. This is because we are experiencing similar circumstances. We will have a much greater sense of empathy if we are battling with the same issue as another person. This begs the questions, does it make it an amazing quality to have as you are much more generous

Everybody can experience somebody else's distress. However, empathising is a much harder skill to master and takes a greater depth of character. Having this empathy gives us a stronger bond with the person in hardship and gives us a moral obligation to partake in this person's life.

I do not believe that it is not just a matter of a great depth of character and having a great deal of empathy. If somebody has not gone through what you have, they cannot understand your perspective. They can try and imagine how you feel, but this is not comparable to the amount of empathy coming from somebody who has been put into the same situation as you.

Some may say empathy is a matter of ignorance; these people do not understand what you are going through or the situation. For that reason, they cannot feel bad and empathise with you. However, I believe that this falsely created empathy is better than no empathy at all.

A Lack Of Sympathy

Even though I did say that we should have sympathy for the individual facing hardships, if there is somebody that does not show empathy, it does not mean they are a cold-hearted being who does not care about you.

Many individuals may encounter empathetic overload where we move toward becoming desensitised to the issues of others. This is normal, particularly in a densely populated area where something turns into a standard, and something extraordinary may simply appear to be normal as they conditioned in that area.

However, more often than not, this happens frequently in the individuals who started as exceptionally sympathetic. They open themselves to such huge numbers of circumstances in which others require help then they to acknowledge exactly how little they can do with so little experience in the situation. Many individuals simply develop depression from this and also endeavour to quell feelings and sympathy as they see there is no hope.

Is Empathy Bad?

Without a doubt, empathy has a truly adverse effect on individuals due to how selective it is. Yes, it ties those with similar experiences together but also places a wall around the people who are going through hardships and those who do not know anything about the other's situation.

Empathy could break up people. Somebody may be going through a rough patch in their life, a friend may be trying to help, but their lack of understanding on the situation is getting in the way of them trying to mend the situation. This could terminate a relationship.

It all depends on your understanding; the more you know about the situation, the more empathy you have in which you can help others with. Do not try and imagine the situation, create this false sense of empathy and then try and help your friend, this is just not the same.

Empathy is truly powerful; use it wisely.
