Think like a boss

Do the best job

Many people will not agree with me, but I still have to say...

Never look at money - you are always looking for the most promising job. Get paid and find the most promising job. Good rewards and good work are not necessarily related to these two things; the best job can give you skills and exposure rates, which are all the conditions you need to advance quickly.

I rarely regret what I have done, but I especially hope that time will turn back. In my early career, I once worked as a deputy general manager of the business department of a world-class consumer company. This position has produced the senior executives of many companies. This company is also very good, and I'm working for a fierce guy who will soon have a good time. This job is good, but the salary is 15% less than my job, so I refused. I made such stupid decisions for thousands of dollars! If you look at it from the perspective of development, those less money are simply insignificant.

I watched as if the guy who took the job had become famous and quickly got promoted - faster than me, and my heart hurts! Although I later caught up with him, I paid for the time. When I think of it, I will gritted my teeth.

Of course, my pain has recovered and I have learned a lesson - there are few perfect positions in the company. Money will come into your pocket sooner or later. Please look away.

Courage to admit defeat

In large corporations, if you want to minimize your mistakes, the quickest way is to assume your responsibility. To admit defeat in a big way, it will make you look strong, and confidence will be seen as a person who values the collective interest. The most important thing is that taking up responsibility can make this mistake not spread too long. Someone has already taken responsibility for this mistake, so there is no need to pursue it. When a person has admitted his failure, it is hard for others to blame him.

There have been only one major mistake in my career. The competitor took ACNielsen’s largest customer from our team and shot it away. I called Steve Schmidt, the chief clerk, and I said I made a big mistake and resigned. He laughed and said: "I can't do it." He said that the company has just spent millions to train me. If a large investment is lost, no one can do it.

Since then, no one has blamed me for this mistake I made, and attacked me—because that would not be welcome. If someone is attacking someone who has already been forgiven by the senator, it is not a smart person.

Admit mistakes and let your team know: Failure is also part of the game.

Become an expert in a field

In your work, is there any area where you know more than others and have an advantage over others? Find one or two of these areas and then study as much as possible the books and data related to it to improve your ability to siphon and draw on.

Many years ago, I entered a company where the company held an inter-departmental meeting and planned to launch a customer loyalty program with a card purchase. Because of the first arrival, I just sit quietly and listen to everyone's speech. They discussed the pros and cons of each program in the actual operation. I'm not sure what the solutions they propose are correct, and what are the arguments, but I know one thing: I must first figure out what methods have been successful in the past and what methods have failed. It took two days after the meeting to find out all the information about customer loyalty programs and analyze them one by one. Then we had another meeting. At this time I felt like a cat with a grin. I felt that nobody in the conference room knew more about it than I did. This time, no one intimidated me. The two days I “invested” in this matter was a very fun experience for me personally, but it meant for the company.

Entering a conference at the level of an expert is definitely worth trying (and it is also a very interesting experience), which can make your career fly.

Be humble, don’t think you’re amazing

My mother said: "Don't be fat enough to wear your trousers." Means to warn me. Be a little humbly and don't be self-righteous.

When the company organizes an event, it helps to prepare for it; it participates in the company’s staff picnics and helps distribute food or pick up trash. Small moves can also attract the attention of others.

One year at a companywide gathering in Sydney, I remembered this reminder. That time, I would go to the stage and report on our performance over the past year for 650 individuals. I arrived at the venue one hour in advance to understand the scene and to see that everyone was busy.

A young woman placed an activity program description in each seat. I walked over and took a half-inch of information in her hand and sent it to each seat.

After she finished her work, she approached me and said, "I didn't see a board chairman doing this kind of help." I was a bit surprised. Her comment makes me feel happy.

Later, I learned that I was just as helpful as a normal person, but this thing actually spread inside the company.

The reason I want to say is simple: Do not think that you are great.
