Not your typical Shanghai Rolls | READ • TRY • INDULGE

Let me channel my cheffy side today haha ... I will be sharing with you a shanghai roll that is far different from the usual or typical one. I just accidentally came up with this recipe one day, like 6 years back which over time has improved a lot with the addition of new ingredients.

This is SO EASY to prepare, you just have to know how to use the knife, chopping board and lumpia/spring roll wrapper. 😂 Anyone can instantly fall in love with this recipe as it has a number of ingredients that most of us are craving for, here they are as follows:

  • Hotdog (preferably Tender Juicy)

  • Spam (you can use any luncheon meat as alternative)

  • Cheese (shredded mozzarella and/or cheddar cheese sticks)

  • Celery

  • Carrots

  • Bell pepper (preferably the green one)

  • lumpia/spring roll wrapper

  • 1 tbsp of oil in a small dish

To prepare the shanghai just follow these simple steps:

  • Preferably place your wrapper on the surface of a large chopping board or any CLEAN flat surface.
  • Just put all the ingredients together in the middle, there is no small, large or exact measurement, it all depends on ur preference, you can decide which ingredient you would want to add more. I am personally putting more mozzarella and Spam 😂 + celery, since I love celery, particularly its leaves.

  • Once all the ingredients are in the wrapper, roll it tightly, after the first roll, fold both sides of the wrapper aiming towards the center and continue rolling till the end, secure the wrapper with the oil (for better adherence, add a little flour into the oil)

NOTE: Be careful not to damage or leave any open spaces in the wrapper to avoid the mozzarella from spilling once it’s already melting.

COOKING GUIDLINE: Pre-heat your pan. Be generous on the cooking oil as you would want your shanghai to be submerged in the oil for deep frying. Once the oil is hot enough, aim at low fire and start frying till you achieve that crispy golden brown color on each side. Careful not to burn the wrapper as it does not add palatability to your already good tasting shanghai, it might ruined the taste otherwise.

Place all cooked shanghai vertically resting on a strainer or any dish where the excess oil can drain properly, otherwise you will end up scalding your tongue haha

And to top it all up! You may have this recipe with or without the dip but I, my friends and family do always want it with my special dip which is so easy to prepare also and you can even use it as salad dressing and dip for any friend specialties. So here’s how to make it:

In a clean bowl, put 2 tbsp of olive oil or sesame oil, 5 tbsp of mayonnaise, 6tbsp of banana ketchup, 1 1/2 tbsp of honey and .5-1 tbsp of hot sauce (preferably tabasco), just mix the ingredients properly and there you you have it! Chow!

Enjoy guys! I would love to hear your experiences about it and how you find this recipe, same way with the my own version of Charlie Chan Pasta.

Thank you so much!

What is the origin of this dish? It looks tasy AF. I'd love to wash it down with a Porter. I think the two who complement each other very nicely.

Don't know exactly how to say where it originated, ahhhhhm just a good outcome out of my kitchen experiments haha... Thanks for dropping by ...

This is a refreshing make over for lumpiang shanghai sir. Will try this some time this week. Thanks for sharing.

head on to your kitchen and roll it! 😉 ... looking forward to see your finish product
