How Can Steemit Help Students

in #philippines7 years ago (edited)

I was reading a post from @surpassinggoogle a couple of weeks ago about Presenting Steemit To People/Students/Youths. I wanted to expound on his points about presenting Steemit to students specifically, and cover how the students can benefit from participating in this platform. The headings used here are from the linked post of @surpassinggoogle followed by my thoughts trying to expound on each heading based on my limited experience in Steemit.

To Find Yourself, To Define Yourself

I remember my struggle as a student in finding and creating my own identity. While this will not be as obvious in the beginning, people who are able to create an identity in Steemit are generally becoming more successful. In our small, but continously growing community in Steemit Philippines, we know who the artist are ( @dwightjaden, @frankydoodle, @julstamban, @errymil, @deveerei, @tegoshei ), we know who the writters are ( @iwrite ), we know who does Steemit tutorial best ( @dreamiely, ), we know who to tap for charitable work ( @luvabi ), and we know who are best at giving inspiration in Steemit and in life ( @surpassinggoogle ). We know who are passionate about homesteading and gardening ( @bien ), we know who we can ask about trading crypto and other technical aspects of the cryptoworld ( @tjpezlo, @precise, @emerge ), and we know who are doing promotion of Steemit the best ( @jassennessaj, @deveerei via his @bayanihan and @steemph effort ). This will be a very long post if I attempt to enumerate all the niche of each individual in the Steemit Philippine community. Everyone in the community have either found that niche or is very well on track in finding it for themselves. The same is true in the bigger community. We follow people who are really passionate about specific things in Steemit, and you can almost associate their usernames to that very thing.

I believe that we are all students in life from the moment we are born, to the time we join our creator. Students in the campus however, are the ones who struggle the most in finding themselves. By joining Steemit you would be forced to find and create your own identity. This can be expidited by making meaningful connections with the community, who would in turn pretty much tell you what they appreciate about you the most, what they feel you are really passionate about, and where are they feel you will be most successful in.

To Redefine Yourself, To Find New Knowledge, To Hone Your Art, To Become a Better Version of Yourself

@surpassinggoogle will always say something about becoming a better version of yourself. Steemit the way I see it, is Social Media 2.0. By joining, students almost automatically gets exposed to an improved version of Social Media that they've been used to. They will either choose to adapt, or they'd quit. Those who will stay will exert effort to better themselves and evolve to what is required to be succesful in the platform. My posts in other platforms before I got into Steemit takes no more than 5 minutes to share at the average. Here, between conceptualizing, organizing ideas, researching, writing, re-writing, proof-reading, editing, thinking of the most appropriate tags, before finally hitting the post button; it takes about several hours.

In the process, all of us - students most specially, will learn multiple things by just continuing to write and post in Steemit. It will be tough, maybe even frustrating in the begining. As you go however, you would find yourself learning and improving in the process; which is the very essence of being a student.

To Know How To Interact

The ability to establish and keep positive social relationships has become more and more important for today's students. Social inadequacies lead to isolation from peers, and can post real challenges to doing well as a student in today's world. The key differentiator of connections we built in Steemit in coparison to the ones we made in Social Media 1.0 is that they are deeper and are more meanigful. Meaningful here means really paying attention to what is being said by the author and trying to understand not only what they are trying to say, but also to their intent and feelings. This is shown by:

  • 1 Asking more relevant questions
  • 2 Writting on topics that mean something to you and your followers
  • 3 Resisting the temptation to send lots of small, trivial, unrelated messages

The more repetitive and superficial the comments are, the bigger the likelihood is of being ignored, unfollowed, maybe even flagged from time to time.

To Win Extra Bucks for Books and Pencils

I remember my struggle with money as a student. I've been envious of classmates who need not worry about funds for projects and group study sessions. I also did not think that I'd be able to take a part-time job while maintaining my academic scholarship. I wish something like Steemit existed then. That would have made my life as a student easier and more enjoyable.

We have a lot of students from Cebu who are making extra bucks for miscellaneous school expenses through the efforts of @jassennessaj, @themanualbot and their team. They are also benefiting from the platform in other ways discussed above, while significantly contributing to the growth of Steemit via their social recruiting efforts, and beautifully written contents. More than the obvious reasons, here is why I think extra income from Steemit can be beneficial for students.

  • 1 It can serve as a safety net for the rainy days. I remember how I almost quit the university because of financial problems. I am glad my parents were able to pull it through. With Steemit today, students will not have to feel helpless in that regard.
  • 2 Steemit is a good introduction to investing. To be more successful here, one needs to stake at least some of the earnings to further his or her influence. Keeping your stake into something you really believe will pay off in the future is the most basic concept of investing. I only got to learn about investing recently. The students of today can learn the basic concepts of investing through Steemit.
  • 3 Use of extra time more productively is, in opinion, the greatest gift students of today can get from Steemit. 95% of college students use some form of social media. Lots millennials use social media 1.0 for "superficial" reasons to keep an "image" up, some to even create a "pseudo life". In Steemit, our students of today will learn about the ups and downs of "real-life", learn how to adapt, and earn some extra bucks while doing it.

Thank you for reading this, and I hope I was able to do justice to Terry's ideas in his post that inspired me to write this one. In writing this post, I learned some more basic formatting related to aligning images. I really believe that it made the look and feel of this post better than my previous ones. To learn more about that too, this is the article from @krnel that I referred to: How to Align Images in Steemit Posts - Left, Right and Center.

Yes, I'm still the same as a beginner and every day I learn something new. Thank you for the article. I like it here

Steemit is very helpful for me as a student. Though I don't have to struggle with money for my education, I can invest the money I earn for the future. Through steemit, I meet a lot of foreign friends, develop my skills, maintaining good relationships and also earn some money. Most of the students in my age spend their time in social media and earn no money, they just spend their money and time But through steemit, we can have fun, develop our skills, earn money and also learn useful things. Steemit is a very useful and a helpful platform for students as well as for adults.
