#ULOG: 04: Happiness with Bulalo (Beef shank broth)
Hi there Steemians and Uloggers. In this #ulog, I want to share one of my no-failing-satisfaction-favorite-dish of all time. Especially in this kind of weather. It is raining cats and dogs outside and normally we crave for something to make us warm.
Bulalo is a beef dish in the Philippines originated in Batangas. It is basically a meat of beef in a broth that is mixed with cabbage, corn, and sometimes potatoes. But this is not just a normal meat Steemians and Uloggers. This is a beef shank and bone still with marrow in it.
The process of cooking takes time in a low fire, the reason that most of the restaurants serving this dish are cooking it in fired coals or lumber woods. To save gas as to have a better tenderness up to the bones. Literally.
There is no special seasoning in Bulalo but salt and pepper. But I love indulging this dish with calamansi and chili pressed directly in the broth. The bone of the shank is the one delivering umami taste to it making the dish super-popular among Filipinos.
But there is something in this meat that we should not miss to eat when we get a chance to have one... hmmmn.
Where to get Bulalo?
As I have mentioned, Bulalo was originated in Batangas, Philippines and this is the place to have perfectly done if we want to taste the original dish as it is. Go to any local restaurants in Batangas, surely, aside from Loming Batangas, Bulalo will be on their top list. Typically served in a half-gallon size of the bowl, which 3/4 of it occupied by the meat, and vegetables will look like "wall-flowers" in it.
Aside from Batangas, if you don't want to go further and hunger is killing you already while driving. Or you are already drowning with your own drool while reading my #ulog. Tagaytay will be the next best place. Partnered with the place's cold weather, while seating on a place overlooking the most beautiful horizon of Taal Volcano, Bulalo will be the best company, well, next to our spouses of course.
Search your map app of the name Merven's and Leslie's. Few of the restaurants I know in Tagaytay that has a better view of the famous volcano and is serving the best Bulalo.
I am dying of hunger and don't want to drive that long.
Ok, ok! If you are just around the metro, and I understand that traffic is always the killer of trips in the Philippines. Driving to Batangas will take about 4 hours or more, while to Tagaytay is at around 2 - 3 hours if coming from Manila. Well, there is a place that is open until 5 in the morning and is just around the Metro.
Along Pasig, there is a place where "word-of-mouth-famed" restaurants are filing. Search your map app of the place Kapitolyo. In this community, you will see different cuisines. Name it and there will be a restaurant for you. Not just restaurant, but making their dishes as exquisite as it should be. They are also doing some fusion dishes.
But if you are really drooling for Bulalo because of the pictures I took. Search for the restaurant named BULLCHEF. Literally, you're going to silently yell the word "B" word once you have tasted their Bulalo. It is so good that I consumed one that usually served for two persons for the price of Php249 (5 USD).
Yes! I am with two of my friends roaming around Kapitolyo, Pasig and happy to find BULLCHEF!
But the best part of this dish, and I believed that it is the reason that I am paying for this dish. And the reason it is the famous broth of all time. Is because of the Bone Marrow. The Bulalo experience will not be complete if you have not eaten this piece.
I don't know, but its texture is just like a fat of the meat, but it's so soft and tasty. They said, it is best mixed with rice, but for me, I always save this for last.
Oh my G! That is a killer
No! it isn't. But anything with too much will kill us. And yes, this dish will kill too if taken for granted.
According to my reading, Bulalo has a lot of health benefits. All in one baby! It even fights obesity.
