i just remembered this thing that my father did. He has some veggie plants on our little patch of soil at the back of the house.
The old folk bought some malathion, mixed it up in a pail of water and drizzled over the veggies generously like he was watering it.
The whole job made us nauseous because of the toxic fumes it created.
The idea of having a safe vegetable to eat failed that day for us.
When we were only starting our vegetable garden, we actually bought pesticide as part of our "starter pack". We never used it though. The smell coming from it when Red was preparing the mixture spelled POISON. We are already researching about other options because pests are a real problem too. We were not able to harvest squash because the insects consumed the flowers.
